Has it got a sticky surface (if the green is removed)?

Hmm, my first thought was that it might be something you put on a floor. Like a lino or vinyl tile?

It is not sticky, and there is no backing paper which can be removed. It is used as it is — it is not stuck to anything.

That's supposed to be green, eh?

Are those shadows at the top-left or are there other layers below the top one?

It is just a single layer.

1. Hobbyists green stuff
2. Metallic green stuff that shrinks to fit
3. Cling film for a camera lens
4. Compressed food for pet ants
5. Colour swatch for a new lawn

I can't think of how it could be used for that. Can you elaborate?

i did find this interesting video while looking but there is no green plastic film, https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=J9b0J29OzAU

It looks to be the colour of magnetic field viewing film which pretty much does what it says

Correct answer servodude. Available in different sizes from eBay. There are quite a few Youtube videos which feature it.

Great!
Sorry if my simple electric train thing was a bit derailing
- I was trying to think of a suitably oblique reference to not give it away (before I realised the font colour thing)

I thought that you were on the right track. I wondered if there was a well-known experiment that I had missed out on, which is why I had a look on Youtube.

Is it a mystery object whose sole function is to fox people on BBs?

I thought: "Some kind of carbon paper", "Something 'optical' " or "Something to do with mechanical pressure" (If that makes sense)

Hasn't this one been solved?

Yes, but the answer was spoilered. The puzzle is still open to those who have resisted the temptation too peek.

Sorry I missed some posts.

I had a different answer in mind.

XFool wrote:I thought: "Some kind of carbon paper", "Something 'optical' " or "Something to do with mechanical pressure" (If that makes sense)

Not carbon paper.

Not optical (except that you look at it) or to do with mechanical pressure either but keep guessing. Previous good (but incorrect) guesses were something photosensitive or thermochromic.

There were a few other suggestions. I thought that servodude may have correctly identified it (which, it was confirmed shortly after, he had) and didn't expect the puzzle to continue but, as you are still guessing, I will respond to these.

Not pH sensitive.

Not arty-crafty. There may be some obscure hobby where it could be used (that applies to anything, though).
It is not heat-shrink anything.
Not photographic.
Not food of any sort.
Not a colour swatch for anything.
