Why are 1989 pennies worth almost £20?

Decimal coinage one might assume but, knowing this board, the answer is bound to be far more complicated.

Because you need eleven more to make exactly £20

Depending upon what they are made of, they could be worth more than £2000:

I did wonder about maundy money, however, list prices are significantly higher than £20.

To purchase a 1989 maundy penny, one would have to proffer about £40 for an extremely fine example or £75 for a mint one.

If you sold one to a dealer, you would receive less. Also, any damage would reduce the value. I don't think this is the answer though.

Maybe this is a trick trick question and, as has already been suggested, it is as simple as 1989 pennies having a total face value of £19.89.

Congratulations to Dave who was the first to give the correct answer: 1989 pennies are indeed worth £19.89, just 11p shy of £20. I don’t think this was a trick question. It just needed a little lateral thinking. :D

Hence my suggestion that it was a trick trick question. One naturally assumes that it is a trick question so the fact that it isn't makes it a trick trick question. It was interesting looking at possible alternative answers, however.

Indeed.

The trick was to ignore my first reply, as I'd forgotten to put it in a spoiler type post. Seems I was lucky, in that others didn't spot I'd effectively answered the question by mentioning decimal coinage. I didn't spell it out, as I thought that answer was too obvious.
