Your message contains too few characters.

As does this board.

“Sedges have edges
and rushes are round.
Grasses (something something)
down to the ground”

Very handy mnemonic, that. At least it would be if I could remember it.

Grasses are hollow

Grasses are hollow

As opposed to full of pith. Apparently at one time oil or candle lights had rush wicks. Folk would cut some rushes and take the pith out of them, then use the dry pith as a wick.

I think my problem with remembering is that while the other three lines don’t change, the third line is sometimes “grasses are hollow” and sometimes is given as “have leaves” going down to the ground.

The rush and sedge leaves spring from the base, and grass leaves at intervals down the stem, so either is equally valid.

"Do you prefer sedge to grass?"

"I don't know I've never smoked sedge, does it give you the same rush?".

Bamboo is a type of grass. (Stem hollow, leaves at intervals down to the ground)

There is a patch in some semi wild woodland near here. Reputedly, some of the Brinks Mat stash was, ere, stashed there briefly.

I gathered a few dead ones to make an insect house. Several of the sections now have leafcutter bee cells.

That's all very well but I'm now 120 Notifications behind (behind what, I don't know) and this Topic appears to be veering Off Topic which, given the board title, can't be so, so they must be On Topic and, thus, are Off Topic. :?:

The Board's sub title now appears to be:

Strange Ness abounds. No question too obscure

I'm guessing a Red Acipenseridae may have penned that or a Man seeking Clarification.

Here's an obsure question:

Bink?

Here's an obsure question:

Eucalyptus?

Interestingly (or not) I saw a small stand of these yesterday.

Also, I am coming to believe that there is a lot more Hornbeam about than most people realise.

That's reminded me to mention that I saw Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets last Sunday. I wasn't anticipating much, but it was extremely good - all sorts of stuff from the early albums up to Meddle. Guy Pratt was top notch, as you'd expect, and Gary Kemp was a revelation! I believe they're playing the Roundhouse next May and I'd thoroughly recommend it. Be a hip cat, be a ship's cat... 8-)

Not at all sure I’d fancy being a ship’s cat, to be honest. Okay, there would be plenty of rats and mice if you go in for that sort of thing, but a cat could get a bit cheesed with those after a few months and one would be surrounded by fish, albeit difficult to get at. Birds when near land, but big stroppy buggers.

Probably a bit light on comfortable places to kip. A bit heavy on getting soaked in cold salty water.

Perhaps being a landlubber with a reliable source of Kattomeat would be less hip, but has its merits.
