So, I assume the screen displays the words to the song on the screen, which the driver reads while singing into a microphone.

Can't see any problem with that. Or can I :o

Need to watch what happens when sufficient semiconductor capacity comes on line to free up the car industry overall.

People are seeing "supply constraints" and assuming that means semiconductor capacity. But eg the lithium guys are looking at the anticipated demand for lithium and what the miners are saying can be mined, and seeing quite a large discrepancy between the two.

Now to be fair to Tesla, they seem to be as prepared as anyone for those kind of constraints, but lack of lithium and other raw materials is going to be a big problem for some car manufacturers. There's a clear comparison to be had with the way that Toyota never really capitalised on the lead they had in hybrids 10 years or so ago, because they couldn't just order up the necessary volumes of raw materials by clicking on Amazon.

Porsche Taycan destroys Model S charging record.

Porsche has just announced that one of its Taycan sedans has broken the coast-to-coast charging record for electric vehicles. The Taycan was driven from coast to coast and it only spent 2.5 hours charging; this record is confirmed by Guinness World Records and noted that it was a major improvement on the old record that stood at 7 hours, 10 minutes and 1 seconds.

Now Porsche was able to drop that number, achieved by a Tesla Model S, to 2 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds, which was enough to take the vehicle the whole 2,834.5 miles (4,562 km) from in front of the New York City Hall to the Los Angeles City Hall.

The lithium shortage is a political creation. The amount of lithium in a lithium ion battery is minute. Currently the streets are littered with single use vape machines, each with a 500 mAhr battery inside that can if salvaged & given a battery management system be used hundreds of times. The manufactures are using lithium ion batteries as they are cheaper than other disposable batteries.

Ditto for the elements that go into stainless steel. It is now hard to avoid stainless steel machine screws etc as they are low cost & everyone is selling them rather than bzp mild steel which anyhow contains elements making it stronger.

The whole narrative that raw materials are in short supply is a manufactured nonsense!

Citation needed (from proper source, not observations about vaping).

The grown-ups in the lithium world are thinking ahead to how they supply the middle of the S-curve of EV growth, it's not about 2 years ago or today, but the lithium supply in 3-5 years time, because that's the kind of lead time on building a new mine.

Every lithium miner/processor is whetting their lips with stories to their shareholders of how lithium is the biggest boom since Rockerfeller, just buy the new shares we are about to offer & you will do well.

It's the long play book used by gold miners, oil well drillers etc.

This is a good example of the hype:

https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles ... -battery-m

At current rates they estimate 365 years of supply from known reserves & then note that with extremely aggressive assumptions it will only be 17 years, the message: "This is a no brainer, give us your money"

But Lithium can be recycled, there is lithium all over the place & lithium ion batteries use very little lithium & the batteries are cheap as in my vape example and the odds on some new tech emerging like solid state batteries are high.

You will find many other examples saying how desperate we are for lithium. Please fund our mine, etc

If you believe them you will likely lose a lot of money.

On a related topic maybe Tesco are quietly getting ahead of Tesla? At least they are delivering ;) something practical with electric artics and delivery trucks.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-60084457

Maybe it's too optimistic to hope that my modest Tesco shareholding will ten bag as a result. :)

FSD supermarket trolleys soon?

True, but retail is going to provide lots of customers for companies like MAN, Scania, DAF and Volvo which actually deliver electric lorries. The customer delivery trucks are an interesting point, a job easily done by electrics and customer facing so good for both the supermarket and the manufacturers street cred. Who makes the electric replacements?

If current legislation isn't changed anyone driving non-exempt business vehicle into Greater Manchester will have to pay a daily fee of circa 11 quid a day.

The best long term exempt is electric, so it is of little surprise that Tesco and others are buying BEV.

The problem as of now, which may cause the legislation to change, is that there is insufficient supply and part of that issue is that there are not enough batteries to satisfy the demand.

If we are ever going to go from tiny numbers of BEV HGV there will have to either be a better energy storage technology or more battery factories.

Feb 7 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) said on Monday it received a subpoena from the U.S. securities regulator related to a settlement that required Chief Executive Elon Musk's tweets on material information about the company to be vetted.

The subpoena by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was issued on Nov. 16, some 10 days after Musk asked his Twitter followers if he should sell 10% of his stake in the company, triggering a stock selloff.

It will be interesting to see how this case develops in California.

"California sues Tesla over ‘racial segregation’ claims at factory"

"The state of California is suing Tesla over allegations of operating a “racially segregated workplace” at its factory near San Francisco.

California’s department of fair employment and housing (DFEH) said it had filed a lawsuit alleging widespread discrimination and harassment of black employees following complaints from hundreds of Tesla workers at its main factory in Fremont."
