Italian Election Analysis/Consequences

#123469

Postby JamesMuenchen » March 9th, 2018, 1:12 pm

Now that the C-R coalition has won, I was looking for some info on their proposed policies and especially the so-called "parallel currency plan":
https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-italy-election-currency/tuscan-rivals-in-italy-vote-spar-over-centre-right-currency-plan-idUKKCN1G61BH

This is the only real analysis I have found so far:
https://en.nikkoam.com/articles/2018/02/italian-elections-more-of-the-same-political-dysfunction

Anyone else have any thoughts or articles to share?

It would be interesting to see the parallel currency or flat-tax put to the test.

PS:
I follow a global investing portfolio based on the rankings here
https://www.starcapital.de/en/research/stock-market-valuation/

Italy was in 10th Spot based as of 31.01.2018 and I think the election results should be positive.
You can "buy Italy" via iShares MSCI Italy Capped ETF (EWI) for a 0.49% charge according to Morningstar.

I'm not exactly sure what will emerge as coalition policies

but from my watching there doesn't seem to be any great hurry, i.e. time for reality to intrude

This looks to be another protest vote following on from the Arab Spring, Brexit, Trump, Le Pen, Dutch...

Whether this new lot can do anything has lots of negative historical connotations going back to the time of Mussolini for 21 years the Italian ruler but then hung in the streets.

When new folk start talking about parallel currencies and tax cuts and all sort of other controversial stuff it usually means they want to keep every one busy while they figure out what to do.

Looking at the biggest Italian etf over the last 20 years:

it does not scream to me that this is the buying opportunity of a lifetime, but no one knows. Personally I still like Greece as an investment which ought to again benefit from the EU fears over what the Italians might do.

Also looking at the Italian Government bond index there is no sign that any one cares much about the election:
