Yes, but the article was about the US where Tesla has gone from zero to selling more cars than BMW. Hence the recent announcements by
German automakers that they are going to start manufacturing electric cars.

Yes, reluctantly and in small numbers and poorly specs.

Only recently have the German autos announced better electric cars to come.

Sun says Tesla least reliable brand, then if you read to the bottom you find the statistics are a joke, a very tiny fraction of UK Tesla owners:

As a barometer for the health of the German luxury auto makers one can look at BMW.

They are a car manufacture/financial service company, their web site is here:

https://www.bmwgroup.com/en/company.html

They employ nearly 130,000, ~7% involved in finance with 30 factories in 14 countries.

The balance sheet (page 120)

https://www.bmwgroup.com/content/dam/bm ... ONLINE.pdf

shows a balance sheet that has total assets of 193b euro, with 9b in cash, about the same as intangibles and with total current assets of 71b euro. Currently they have good credit ratings

Sales have been good with turn over up from 94 to 98b euro 2016 to 2017.

If the figures from https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-out ... nger-cars/
are correct their US operation has a poor August with sales down over 13%.

There annual report notes that the future is electric, but is the future BMW?

Should sales in the US continue as poorly as in August they will have issues and if their belief that the future is electric is correct they will face completion from both Tesla and the new Chinese electric vehicle maker who recently listed in the US.

It will be interesting to see how their equity trades (bmwyy in the US).

Tesla chief accounting officer, walks after 1 month:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... f-scrutiny

The fact that he has walked says a lot more than his nice comments about Tesla and will imho do nothing good for the equity price.

Shame he thought he had to go.

Perhaps he could have learnt to chill a bit -

Musk smokes weed and drinks whisky on pod cast:

Think he must be short Tesla as he seems determined to send it down.

More comments on more departures as equity slides:

If Musk can turn all of this around he will be something remarkable.

This is the so called infamous video of Musk on the chat show. It contains some strong language from the host:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycPr5-2 ... e=youtu.be

I found it to be one of the best interviews I have ever seen, topical and showing Musk at his best explaining things, suggesting things and looking total in command of everything.

The interview is imho nothing like the internet commentary about it.

As I have typed many times I believe Tesla is too hard for most folk, but I do believe the shares are likely to go a lot higher.

This morning when Tesla opened down and there were many articles saying the company was broken it was hard for longs to maintain discipline and resist the temptation to sell.

There will be other days like today, maybe Monday will be another.

If an investor/trader can handle days like today or as many traders did, have none coming in (better short) then enter on the reversal (cover shorts) with a tight stop, selling on the top, both points were well defined for active folk who can read charts there was ~$10 per share in the common stock and with this being a Friday there was more to be had by buying the cheap calls that expired today.

But how many folk who read this board can do this sort of thing?

My own view is that Tesla is now far less risky than it was, due to the production and sales of the model 3 and the outselling of BMW in the US is a huge positive, indicative of where Tesla can now go and the dangers to legacy auto.

More importantly Musk, showed in the pod cast, that he is very much on top of his game which is a huge asset for Tesla (of course many think the opposite) and that imho is a huge positive.

The danger for anyone invested in Tesla is that if Musk leaves or is taken out then the equity price will imho crater so fast that most longs will be trapped and suffer a big loss that might never be recovered, and even if a replacement like Tim Cook taking over from Steve Jobs exists there will still be a long period before any good work is recognised in the share price as happened with Tim Cook.

Of course it is, as always, down to each person to evaluate the risk/rewards. Imho the risk is that the equity goes to zero, the reward is multiples of the current share price if things pan out as I think they can.

Personally I considered selling, set a stop on part of my holdings then having seen the price action cancelled the stop which would have been hit later and for now I am comfortable with what I hold, but no one should follow anything I say or do, everyone has to do their own research and make their own decisions.

And I agree with him, I've felt the same for a while, and it's interesting that someone as venerable as him is bold enough to come out and say it.
There are things about Musk that don't inspire confidence, not least how he looks half-dead most of the time [I'll allude as vaguely as that], and then the wanton recklessness of some of many of his statements.
Would I want to own Tesla stock or drive one his cars - NO way, that would feel like endorsing him and his 'weird behaviour'!

I doubt the short sellers are looking to close out yet, its just getting interesting.

Here's a little game I've just invented. You have to think of something which it would surprise you to see Musk reported as doing in tomorrow's papers. I have to admit its not a game I'm very good at.

Interesting update from Tesla:

https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/blog/compan ... edirect=no

If Tesla has exceeded the rate of model T production as claimed this is an extraordinary achievement, building something vastly more complex than the 2 speed model T at a faster rate is something I would have thought impossible, but...

The problem with Buffett argument is that everything he said also applies to the mobile phone makers, actually more so as a mobile phone is a lot easier to make than a car.

Yet Buffett has also said how great a product the iPhone is and how it is a dominant brand. A brand created despite intrenched existing suppliers and many new low cost phones from India and China.

The question is can Tesla create a car that has the loyalty of the iPhone? If they can then Buffett will likely be a buyer of Tesla equity.
