Sorry if this has been posted before, I haven't seen it though.

I found this fascinating, a Munro teardown of a Tesla 3, a Chevy Bolt and a BMW i3.

I did not appreciate the huge differences in battery design and motor design between the three.

It seems to be a very objective look at the three designs.

Hello John,

Yes, it was posted before.

Munro discussed the design with Tesla and pointed out that the model 3 rear floor assembly was not well done. Rumour has it that Musk fired the engineer responsible and he recently noted on a pod cast that Tesla are going for a cast aluminium rear assembly.

I was the person who posted the Munro report you mention. This one is different to that.

rs,

I'm not sure it has been directly posted on this thread before, but I have certainly seen it, as it informs some of my views of the relative positions of design maturity of the various manufacturers out there. Likewise I am pretty sure some of the others who post here have watched it given some of the points they make. Nonetheless, thank you. There are many similar teardowns out on the net and they all lead to the same place: Tesla is mostly ahead on BEV matters (imho).

Meanwhile Toyota are ditching HEV in favour of BEV, except that the are not spinning it that way, no not at all. Because that would imply a loss of face, just as with all the other legacy ICE makers, so they are spinning it as being more HEV ... Anyway their deal with Panasonic for the non-Tesla assigned factories will be a part of this, and like Tesla they are getting additional (Chinese) partners in the cell-mix.

On the other hand here is one of the serious downsides of ownership for Tesla owners. The wait times and cost of simple repairs. In summary a simple little bumper scrape while backing into a garage has led to a five figure repair bill and over two month wait time for repairs.

This is a video from some people who have followed the Tesla story right from the start and are fans of the brand and of Musk, there is even a quick appearance from Musk himself in this video.

I am conflicted on this whole story. I admire Musk greatly and he said that his mission all along was to force ICE manufacturers to take EVs seriously and I think we can safely say he has achieved that better than anyone might have predicted.

There is little doubt that the technology of Teslas is ahead of the competition and the cars are a dream to drive.

However there are question marks over quality and service.

How does this translate to the future share price of Tesla? Who knows?

Interesting Dispatches programme on Channel 4 tonight. Covering pollution in one school in London.

Their scientific investigators made a significant point. It's not just pollution from car exhausts which is the problem. All cars are producing harmful micro particles from their brakes and tyres which are getting into children's lungs. They emphasised that electric cars are producing these particles as much as ICE vehicles.

The conclusion was that the government needs to do much more to investigate vehicle pollution in Cities and control it urgently.

Ever since the industrial revolution political analysis has been about cost benefit. The amazing fact is that even with all the pollution & that now includes lots of radio frequencies people have been living longer & have much better lives in a material sense if not always in a spiritual sense.

There is certainly pollution from all tyres, but the brake dust from regenerative braking cars like Tesla is much reduced. Tesla brake pads last for many times longer Han those used in ice cars.

I am reading quite a lot of anecdote about Tesla BEV brake pads lasting about 10x as long as ICE pads due to the regenerative braking. This isn't just a Tesla thing, I think it was a Chevy Bolt BEV user I read said he never changed his pads in ?? 150,000 miles and sold the car with them almost unworn.

There will be slightly increased pollution from the BEV tyres due to the increased weight.

There are also a lot less other pollutants. No gearbox oil. No engine oil. No hydraulic oil that I am aware of. And the coolants are in such closed/sealed circuits and operating between pretty well controlled temperature limits, that they seem to be lasting very well.

UK magazine tests the realistic range of electric vehicles. Hyundai, Jaguar and Kia have longer ranges than Teslas!?

Will be interesting to see how Model 3 performs when it arrives in UK.

Someone has a magazine to sell.

Most of this article shows that a small economy vehicle can go further than a large luxury vehicle, although not even all of these manage that.

No idea how valid the test is, but certainly interesting results. They really could have included the claimed range in the blurb though, although more interesting might be the claim the company are using on their website.

Audi e-tron: Range not mentioned. https://www.audi.com/en/experience-audi ... -tron.html

i3 stated 160 RW RW 163 https://www.bmw.co.uk/bmw-cars/bmw-i/2018-i3-and-i3s

i pace (up to) 292 (WLTP) RW 253 https://www.jaguar.co.uk/jaguar-range/i ... N_BMM_(OLD)_Retail_New&utm_term=ipace&utm_content=&cm_mmc=PPC_Google-_-Retail-I%20PACE-_-X590_C/UK/GB/JAG/01179938-001_CONVER-GET_MY19_1704-3112_ENG_JaguarBrand_BG_ALON_BMM_(OLD)_Retail_New-_-&gclid=Cj0KCQjwov3nBRDFARIsANgsdoFiXNpPkXywtuHi9z5numJ1LqRrmP22HRMEZD8JE6hZ9RvIIx_cjcwaAkt2EALw_wcB

Jaguar need to sort their URLs out...

Norway surely has to be too rich to be typical, but the i3 seems to be falling off a cliff.

MTD Norway (estimated additional deliveries to come this month):

e-tron: 168 (336)

ipace: 124 (248 est)

i3: 30 (60)

model S 36 (72)

model X 69 (132)

e-golf: 226 (452)

model 3: 425 (850)

Kona: 86 (132)

https://eu-evs.com/

Norwegians also appear to have a complex relationship with price and range, neither of which appears to bestow sales domination, although more than one model in that list may be limited by availability. Audi certainly haven't fulfilled the 7000 pre-orders they had in Norway.

Estimated for month:

Tesla: 1584

VAG: 1182

I wonder how close the sales revenue is given the product mix.

Not sure that Jaguar would be entirely happy with a description of "small economy vehicle!"

Surely a little shopping trolley can't out range a 21st century thoroughbred containing the greatest BEV battery tech known to man?
