What a shame there's no representation from a British team! Have we no engineers interested enough?

I thought a team from Edinburgh was going (unless they've pulled out?)

Thanks - I missed the Edinburgh team. Will be interesting to see how they fare.

There's an article here:

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/scie ... 58586.html

which describes an issue that Boeing are having with their contract to deliver astronauts to the Space Station. Anyway, it mentions the costs...

The so-called "Commercial Program" would restore Nasa's ability to fly humans from the United States - a capability that was lost when the Space Shuttle retired in 2011.

Since then, the space agency has had to rely on Russia to fly its astronauts to space, at a cost of more than $80m (£61m) per seat.

Under the program, Boeing's contract was worth as much as $4.2bn (£3.19bn); SpaceX's was $2.6bn (£1.9bn) for the same number of flights.

Quite a significant cost difference between Boeing and SpaceX.

Good example of how social media groups turn on those who do things they don't like:

https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3 ... l-twitter/

One can expect these kinds of campaigns to be fired at shareholders as the ability to manipulate opinion on social media becomes more refined. The ability to keep swinging at Musk opens the possibility that they will rile him enough to produce a reaction that will hurt shareholders as did the Thai saga.

At a local level I have seen one business destroyed by a focused social media campaign. This kind of manipulation is likely to hurt shareholders, but I am not sure how it can be defeated. potentially the move away from passwords to Id based on your body such as on Apple's iPhone may allow action against instigators, but the price is a loss of privacy which might prevent such things via a no Big Brother campaign & anyhow such attacks can be launched internationally.

Tesla Asks Suppliers for Cash Back to Help Turn a Profit
Electric-car company, in memo, asks supplier to return a meaningful portion of money spent since 2016

...

The Silicon Valley electric-car company said it is asking its suppliers for cash back to help it become profitable, according to a memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal that was sent to a supplier last week. Tesla requested the supplier return what it calls a meaningful amount of money of its payments since 2016, according to the memo.

The auto maker’s memo, sent by a global supply manager, described the request as essential to Tesla’s continued operation and characterized it as an investment in the car company to continue the long-term growth between both players.

If this is true, and it's not just a ruse to maximise profits at the expense of suppliers then Tesla are in deep sh*t

Yes, but here is the problem: How much if any of this story is correct and how does an investor/trader have any handle on the truth or otherwise.

In this new social media environment small numbers of folk with vested interests can set up convincing stuff to fool journalists.

I have no idea if this story is right or wrong and that is becoming a huge problem.

Markets kind of believe it but only kind of as Tesla is not down a lot as one would expect if this was a true story.

Makes for interesting times and what is now being used against Tesla is coming to a stock near you and a political party. We have finally got to doublespeak where hardly anything can be trusted and investors/voters now are being very badly served by all of this. Unfortunately I don't have an answer consistent with a free democracy and free speech!

From the article:

Tesla declined to comment on the specific memo. But it confirmed it is seeking price reductions from suppliers for projects, some of which date back to 2016, and some of which haven’t been completed.

So there's a baseline...

Ha Ha, an article cites the company has having confirmed the story.

Do you think the writer of the article would ever say that the company didn't confirm the story?

I have no idea of the context, the amounts involved, what Tesla aims are with this.

If I read it straight I would be inclined to short Tesla as if things are as the article implies there is not much hope for Tesla. So either the article is right which also means that Tesla have deceived shareholders and all their big investors and will get litigated out of existence or the story is fake or spun to make Tesla look bad.

There is little balance here or risk/reward for the journalist: They get paid on eyeballs not on content whereas for Tesla and investors there is potentially serious capital loss.

However, given that Tesla is now well off its lows investors/traders don't seem to give the article much credence.

No I think they would have claimed the company was unavailable for comment, or declined to comment.

Tesla have issued a statement... if this is a conspiracy against Tesla then Tesla are in on it...

So Tesla is putting the squeeze on its suppliers.
Sounding like it is learning from the existing volume manufacturers.
What's the big deal?

Great article, clear, punchy & effective. As an attempt to destroy someone it has all you need: Statements by experts that Musk's ideas can't work, many practical failures to make cars & launch satellites & the theme that Musk is an ego that can do nothing, but that it is never his fault when he fails.

If all this was true there would be no point writing the article, but someone fears him & wants him put down & this journalist gave them their money's worth. Still I enjoy this kind of thing, the more shorts the better.

I agree that is a problem in current world. And one Trump for example tries to use to his advantage at every turn - any criticism is fake. While that''s clearly rubbish, the fact that there is a lot of fake news about is a concern, and allows people like Trump to get away with it.

But I do have to question why any negative comment on Musk is questioned as fake by you, but I've never seen any positive remarks from Musk or Tesla questioned in the same way by you.

Alternatively another point of view that might be valid.
Personally I find him similar to Trump. He shoots from the lip without thinking and makes vast expansive claims for success without actually achieving it in many cases. Many people also post a lot of negative articles about him which his supporters claim is all fake news.
I find the truth is usually somewhere in between when I see this kind of stuff but you prefer to see the postive only I find that can sometimes be a dangerous position if investing money.
