Isn't it part of Standard Chartered Bank, which was formed by the merger of the African Standard Bank and the Asian Chartered Bank?

That is correct and the parent is British but almost all its business is overseas, in Africa and the Far East mostly, but no I have never dealt with them.

Not according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Bank which says that Standard Chartered sold up its holding in Standard Bank in 1987. And their HQ is in Johannesburg.

Well well. That is interesting. I missed that. I know Standard Chartered Bank quite well, and it remains quite a big operation in Africa. Presumably it sold the name and or company. Would have thought that that would be somewhat confusing.

Anyway Standard Bank has nothing it would seem to do with Standard Chartered Bank and so I can confirm that I know absolutely nothing about Standard Bank.

Standard Chartered has always been a bit like BP, accident prone.

Anyway, Standard Bank should not be confused with Standard Chartered Bank.

you can easily confuse Santander with errm Santander
each of their high street branches is designated Personal or Business,
I approached my local branch to open a business account
they made a telephone appointment for me
long story, but eventually the account was opened.to
Some weeks later I went to pay in a cheque only to be told it was a Personal branch and I would have to go to the one 3 miles away that was a business branch.
They look identical from outside
Who knew

I suppose you were fortunate to get a Branch of any sort.

we used to have 9 or 10 banks/building societies in my high street, so many that TV crews would pitch up and use them as a backdrop for a banking story
now there is one left, Nationwide.
