Stockmarket today

Is the market so depressed about Brexit that it is in general down 2% or so? Or is there another reason?

I guess it is because sterling is a bit stronger, but thanks.

Is this a precursor to a new Investment Strategy (this is after all the Investment Strategy Board). Is this going to be like "Sell in May and go away ..." or something along the lines of "Don't buy while May Dithers...wait till <<fill in blank>>"?

Suggestions for <<fill in Blank>> awaited with interest.

... and as per the link now provided, also due to the fear of a US recession.

As this is Investment Strategies, what do you do in such a situation?

If of any interest, I'm merely monitoring my portfolios but not taking any action until 2019-20.

This is two headed : one side of the page says "FTSE dives as Brexit delay boosts pound" t'other side of the page says "RELATED NEWS - Sterling slides as May pleads with EU over Brexit deadline"

Surely the mystery is why (until today) the market has been so strong.

Dr Nakisa presents evidence that there is little correlation between Sterling Exchange rate and the FTSE100.

https://youtu.be/TjbQuA5ibgA

It's only a 4 minute video. The first minute and a half explains "correlation" (in layman's terms) and then looks at data over the last 20 years.

( TBH - I've watched quite a few of his videos from Pensioncraft and I've never seen him so,ahem, "forthright" (!))

p.s. if you look into his biography - he achieved a 1st class Honours in Physics from Imperial followed by a Doctorate at Imperial and the a 3 year fellowship at Oxford University. He spent 12 years at UBS (finance instructor and strategist in Global Asset Allocation).

Well who can predict these things? The FTSE100 went up about 25% in the 18 months following the referendum. Go figure.

Scott.

Probably to do with the inverted bond yield curve in the US https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/business-47583443indicating an increased likelihood of a recession. Dow down 1.47% and Nasdaq down over 2%.

Global risk off. Not U.K. specific. Brexit maybe a factor but by no means the most important.
