Seems we are all vigilant planners. On this site I guess we are not typical of the investment population at large I think it has me down as less decisive than I really am.

"The independent rider" vive la difference

What they say :
As a confident investor you follow your own path without being swayed by others. There is bit of a pessimist in you, helping you balance the risks and benefits when investing, although you can focus too much on the negatives and find losses hard to digest. Sometimes anxiety kicks in and makes you take decisions too quickly. You also have a habit of assuming your needs today will be the same in the future, which is unlikely. So your financial goals may not match up with your future circumstances.

and
investment strength : Individualist
Defining characteristic : Belief in oneself
Most likely to : Make snap decisions
Least likely to : Take advice from friends

Actually very true : my excuse for their statement "You also have a habit of assuming your needs today will be the same in the future, which is unlikely. So your financial goals may not match up with your future circumstances" is that I am well into pensionable age and quite comfortably off

A fun exercise - thanks, Moorfield

Another vigilant planner here (no real surprise to me, the description seems spot on) although after that test I think I might better be described as an overweight vigilant planner - that test involved an awful lot of sweets, jelly beans and pizza. And that John, he's a bad influence. :)

Well that's interesting.

Vigilant Planner

Investment strength:- Doing your homework
Defining characteristic:- Anxious about investing
Most likely to:- Excessively worry about making a decision
Least likely to:- Act impulsively

Yep, that sums it up pretty well for me

Yes Vigilant Planner too, but I don't think the analysis they gave was right.

I think their model interpreted my reluctance to bet on 50/50 bets as risk aversion, which it isn't. In investing everything has risks so it isn't a matter of whether you take risks or not but how you assess what the risks are and what decisions you take in the light of that.

Perhaps there are only two possible results - "Vigilant Planner" and "Independent Rider".

What would be interesting to see is all possible personality outcomes and descriptions, but I haven't been able to find anywhere on that website.

From The Telegraph https://www.telegraph.co.uk/investing/i ... tegy-test/

The most common character is the “vigilant planner”, making up 38pc of the total. These people are careful investors who may sometimes miss out on opportunities because they particularly feel the pain of losses.

Results showed the second most commonly found character is the “level-headed optimist”, at 23pc of the total. These investors cope well with uncertainty but are prone to being impulsive.

“Opinion hunters”, who prefer to follow the crowd, and “independent riders”, who don’t, comprised 22pc and 17pc respectively. I was in the latter group, instantly recognising that I like to tread my own path and rarely feel regret.

VP here (there seem to be only four types)

Back in 2001 on the US Fool's Berkshire Hathaway board we had a fair bit of discussion about Myers-Briggs personality types. Myers-Briggs is a fairly well established test, albeit somewhat controversial, so much so that a lot of major employers use it in their employee selection process. There are 16 personality types in Myers-Briggs.

In advanced Western societies INTJ's are approximately 2% of the population. On the Fool's Berkshire Hathaway board over 90% were INTJ (introverted, intuitive, thinking and judging). Talk about a selection effect.

Here's one of the threads (I seem to remember that there was a poll, but I can't find it)

In an earlier post puffster has already linked to a 2018 Telegraph article that discusses the same study.

The results from that article list four different options, and how they came out at that time -

Vigilant Planner - 38%
Level-Headed Optimist - 23%
Opinion Hunter - 22%
Independent Rider - 17%

Total - 100%

Thanks for that. Just before you posted this I'd spotted the four types in another article and hoped to edit my post as fast as possible. Too slow :D
