I am looking at investing in a private equity fund, Harbourvest Global Private Equity (HVPE) for three reasons.
1 - Correlation between HVPE and some of my larger holdings is either very low or negative (using the CORREL function in Excel) which is very good for diversification
2 - -Having worked for a company that was bought and sold by a PE company, I have some firsthand understanding of how they operate, which is very savvy and very, very profit orientated.
3 - The returns from HVPE have been decent enough over the last five years
Does anyone here have any insight into PE as a class and HVPE in particular?

Re: Private Equity Investments
F&C Investment Trust FCIT has quite a big holding if various private equity funds, including Harbourvest and Pantheon, as I recall. A look at their annual reports may give you some insight.

The costs are outrageous but you never see them, except in the net returns.
Essentially they are a bet on liquidity and falling interest rates.

Have you looked at VCTs? There is a very good board on here viewforum.php?f=25 with knowledgeable investors.
There are advantages to investing in these (large tax advantages) but there are some potential downsides - but well worth investigating.

My IT portfolio follows John Baron’s recommendations and his PE IT of choice is Standard Life Private Equity Trust (SLPE).

I have not looked at VCT's. I have no real understanding of them as a class of investment at all but as you suggest, it may well be worth boning up on them. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the note. JB is well regarded and he must have chosen this one for a reason so I will have a look.
