Hi all,
As a matter of personal-portfolio-policy, I keep around 10% cash on account.
My portfolio is now of a size that 10% is not an insignificant amount of money.

Re: Placeholder investments
Skyship and a couple of others have been offering some suggestions for fixed term/fixed interest on another thread over on gilts and bonds viewforum.php?f=52
I use such beasts for known returns of cash at specific dates. Not quite cash, looks liquid enough, I expect the spread will get you in you're moving in and out too much.

OTOH you might even consider an equity, something like Ruffer Investment Company (RICA). Rather low yield but not a large spread and domiciled in Guernsey, so no stamp duty to pay.

Re: Placeholder investments
When I have held cash I used to park it in VGOV.
This used to not be so volatile as recently.
It also pays monthly.

I have a lot parked in DEC Diversified Energy. Good yield with a W8-BEN, small spread, (presently) trading in a narrow range.
Not as safe as some short-term bonds though, as kempiejon has suggested, but you'd need to hold to completion otherwise as he has also noted the spread will get you.... and another point with some bonds is that they're rather illiquid if you have a significant amount to invest.
