What are your top holdings and why?

Postby elephanthunt11 » December 22nd, 2023, 3:54 pm

Hi all,

Very curious to know what your top holding(s) is and why. Feel free to add any context.

31 years old, primarily geared for growth (with a bit of income). £107k.

Top holdings:
Image

Xray Holdings (Top 10)

Barratt Developments 8.5%
LVMH 8.4%
American Express 5.7%
Apple 5.5%
Micorsoft 5.5%
Astrazeneca 3.8%
Nvidia 2.2%
Amazon 1.6%
Alphabet 1.5%
Meta 1.4%

A lot of exposure to the US indirectly via my US holdings. Wanted to share to get the conversation going - I know many contributors here will have very different looking portfolios, and I'm hoping to learn about your perspectives and why you hold what you do.

Thanks guys,
Merry Christmas wishes

VEVE circa 40%
VHYL circa 25%
BRKB circa 7% (am aware of implications of US Estate Tax)
Some recent bond funds, circa 10%.
Fundsmith Circa 3%
Cash 4%
A whole host of other bits and bobs I need to tidy up or I'm keeping for when I need to realise some CGT losses, including
Link Fund Woodford thingy 0.buggerall% :(

Income investor, retired...

Preference shares AV.A, AV.B, GACA, GACB which are all Aviva Group - c6.5%. Income and, hopefully, SP increase in next two years.
Diversified Energy DEC - c5.4%. Income. And SP increase I hope.

Large ragbag of HYP shares, Prefs, ITs, Couple of 'growth' holdings, which haven't.

Since I am primarily an income investor I am unlikely to help you much but Alliance Trust, a generalist IT is my biggest holding simply because it has grown well in recent years, and it has a modest dividend. Last time I looked, HSBC was next biggest. It is also there because it has grown well in recent years and it is now a decent income share.

As for your holdings, they look like good choices for long term growth although I would be contrary and have less exposure to the very large US shares.

I hold mostly UK shares plus two Canadian banks but look for total return by which I mean I am not going all outfor income. I want the prospect of some growth as well.

CP, SLG, UNP, BRK.B, CLDN, BATRA, BAM, FCIT, PH and AVAV.

I'd be amazed if anyone makes much sense of much that lot (I should do a poll, I reckon the typical TLFer would get 3 without looking them up). That's what happens when you just quote the EPIC / Stock codes. Many of us will glaze over posts like this as we don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of every UK code (never mind foreign shares, as most of mine are) and figure that it's not worth the bother.

I may do a write up as to the why's on each one later, including the company names. I had started a draft version, but got distracted by All Creatures Great and Small.

Edit Oops! UP should of course be UNP. Damned fat fingers syndrome on a smartphone after several pints

I knew 6 of the 10, had to look up SLG, BATRA, PH and AVAV.

VUSA is far and away my biggest holding. BRK-B is the largest position that is not a fund, although of course it behaves a bit like one. Then Apple and MicroSoft.

I used to be a HYP investor. I was quite happy with it, but when I retired I decided I didn't actually need the income from it, and also I felt that I'd prefer to simplify things in case I'm run over by a bus, and also move more towards growth.

My main portfolio is now:
68% VWRL Vanguard all-world ETF
19% ATT Allianz Tech Trust
6% FSV Fidelity Special Values
7% AAS Abrdn Asia Focus

The latter two are gradually being wound down and reinvested into the first two

My SIPP is almost totally VWRL and ATT

I also have a "Dogs of the FTSE" portfolio for a bit of fun but this is relatively small in comparison

Holdings in order of size: CTY, HFEL, MYI, WTAN, JGGI, BNKR, VWRL, SMT, VUCP. Total return of CTY, HFEL and MYI hasn't been very good over the last five years. I have slowly diversified away from them (with mixed results).

Yes, although most of the epics that come up on here are the same same. It's only a few eccentrics that hold more offbeat stocks ;)

My equity holdings are almost entirely UK listed shares. 26 in total the largest of which are currently;

Sage 10.8%
Shell 9.0%
Unilever 8.4%
IG Group 7.1%
National Grid 6.1%

These are top simply because they have risen the most since purchase. I do not top-slice, rebalance, cut losers or otherwise interfere with the evolution of my portfolio. That's worked well so far.

Until recently AZN was the top holding but has been sold to help one of my kids onto the property ladder. I do miss it and will likely repurchase as and when funds become available.

My portfolio is nominally equally weighted. You can see a recent list of holdings, ranked by weight, at viewtopic.php?p=628947#p628947

They find their own level and, if they are more than 1.5 times the median holding weight, they are trimmed by 25%. As you will see from an earlier post, the last share to be trimmed was BAE systems (BA.) In October. The money is reinvested in lower weight shares with a good yield, determined by the inverse ranking by weight and the normal ranking by yield. I impose limits on share of income and of portfolio cost, as explained in those posts.

CBA, MQG,WES all ASX.. They make up around 70% of the value of the portfolio. All three have outperformed Berkshire Hathaway for decades. The other 8? 9? 10? would make up the rest. Some of them I need to get rid of,but after decades of doing nothing I can't break the habit.I never really bother looking

Cash I don't count but around $500K,the dividend yield is high.Something needs to be done there, but I can't break the habit of doing nothing.I might get my finger out when the next 30% pull back happens, but can I break that habit of doing nothing?

DPH, III, JII, AZN, BEMO, BRWM. Some 25% all held for a long time. The rest governed by how much I feel comfortable with losing at the time of purchase.

Reading later replies, I realise there is little context to the above for those not 'in the know'.

Basically, asfter years of trying to beat the market, with varying levels of failure, I decided to 'be the market' and so largely invest in Golobal Trackers VHYL and VEVE with some BRKB as it doesn't pay a Dividend but does seem to grow well, and effectively gives me way of buying Dollars and getting a return on them.
Recent movement into Bonds is down to the expected reduction in interest rates and a hope this will reverse some of the massive declines of the last couple of years.
I'm 57 years old, retired (MrsF to follow suite in March), with reasonable DB pensions so only need about 2% income from assets so no need to chase dividends or balance portfolios. Hence a Total Return approach and an unsheltered account that autosells a few hundred quid a month as a top up.

And I'm lazy :)

All the usual suspects … I’m in (slow) process of rationalising things so a number of ragtag things have gone. Gradually moving to fewer individual holdings and more collectives (ETFs and ITs). Spread across general trading account, ISA and SIPP.

SWDA (accumulation)
VHYL
VEVE
FCIT
CLDN
LGEN
LWDB
BA.

The above account for about 50%

The top three account for 30%

Best wishes, Steve

Multiple portfolios...top 10 holdings by value

LTI, LGEN, BRWM, SREI, BIPS, PM, MYI, SUPR, JEGI, MSFT. This makes about 30% of the total. Over diversified but it does mean I produce a stupendous monthly pot of dividends and interest. Lucky with a few takeovers etc of late.

Still in employment but probably retiring imminently.

A stupendous pot of dividends usually comes from a stupendous pot of high yielding investments not from over diversification.

My largest holdings from the main sectors:

JGGI, SAIN, MYI
BUT, ATST, VEVE
LWDB, DIG
JEGI, BRSA, VUSA, AAIF
BERI, NCYF

I do hold several REIT's, Renewal Energy Trusts and bond ETF's too.

The focus is on income and some growth. VEVE, I also use as a benchmark to compare against.
