It makes interesting reading. Tobacco is the stand out, but the London market is more diversified than I thought.

I don't think this is what you think it is. If you are thinking that banks are 1.21% of the UK market, then clearly that is wrong.

They are separate indexes for each market sector, ie the Banks index, the Beverages index etc. You can see if you click on the + next to each entry that there is a previous open, close daily high, daily low value. The Value numbers are the value of the index. Assuming all the indexes started at the same value at some point, you can see that Tobacco with an index value of 54876 has outperformed every other sector.

The UK stock market isn't very diversified.

The FTSE all share is dominated by Oil and Gas and banks.

For instance see the sector breakdown tab here

http://www.hl.co.uk/funds/fund-discount ... dex-income

Which shows

12.30% Oil & Gas Producers
11.17% Banks
6.96% Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology
6.02% Mining
5.70% Tobacco
5.11% Support Services
4.52% Travel & Leisure
4.39% Life Insurance
4.32% Equity Investment Instruments
3.34% Media

Or look at the Top 10 Holdings tab which shows 10 companies make something like 40% of the market.

6.15% HSBC Holdings PLC (UK Reg)
4.48% British American Tobacco
4.48% Royal Dutch Shell A
3.93% BP
3.67% Royal Dutch Shell B
2.65% Diageo
2.58% GlaxoSmithKline
2.53% AstraZeneca
2.50% Vodafone Group
2.05% Unilever

Thanks for that. Come to think of it that table did not make much sense. Where do I get a full breakdown of market sector capitalisations?

The Digital Look advanced screener can be used to laboriously work out the capitalisations of each sector individually. Like everything else on that site, the screener has become more flaky over the years.

Syrio's post got me thinking. I hold all of the Top 10 (9 if you consolidate RDSB). The Old Chestnut of Low Cost Tracker v Stock Picking suddenly comes front of mind........

BUt do you hold them or did you buy them in equalish weightings. Look at the weightings of a tracker and compare to your own.

Interesting Question, My figures shown above are as-is and may very well reflect occasional tinkering on my part. What % of the portfolio the holdings were at acquisition would take an afternoon playing with my spreadsheets! Not really sure if it's material to overall investment portfolio but do contemplate how FTSE250 and smaller caps may outperform over time? I didn't realise GSK is such a Big Component of the 100!
