Rear mech mount

#165362

Postby moorfield » September 9th, 2018, 6:30 pm

Time to replace a (shimano) rear mech on one of the bikes I'm trying to get rebuilt for the winter. This is approx 15 yrs old, knackered spring + bent/stripped clamp that will no longer hold the cable. This came with a hanger with a little notch that slots against the frame. Does anyone know what this is called and is it standard these days? ie. I can't just buy any new one I would have thought ...

Yes, from the photo it looks like there is no intermediate hanger but the derailleur bolts straight to the frame.

Like one of these

I might have an old one somewhere if you are interested, I'll have a look.

I think you'll be fine with anything that is Shimano compatible and 7 speed (looks like 7 speed cassette?). Just had a look at one of my bikes which has an original Shimano rear mech from 2004 so similar vintage to yours, it has a similar notch to yours but the difference is that it has an angle adjustment screw set into it which allows you to alter how far the derailleur cage sits from the cassette (e.g. if you switch to a cassette with a larger inner cog, then you can use this screw to move the cage further away to ensure it doesn't rub). All my newer bikes have this as well. From memory of my older bikes they were similar to yours - they had the same plate to ensure that the derailleur was at the right angle, but it didn't have the screw to make it adjustable.

If there's a bike shop near you that specialises in vintage and secondhand bikes then I'd recommend popping in for some expert advice. Most of the people running those shops are doing it more for love than money, they'll be able to give you good advice and will most likely have a secondhand derailleur in the shop that will fit the bill and not cost too much. E.g. I know that 9 and 10 speed derailleurs are interchangeable as the chain is the same, and both will work with 11 speed if you switch to an 11 speed chain as the internal chain width is the same but the external width is narrower. But you can't use a 9 speed derailleur with 8 speed unless you change the jockey wheels as the internal chain width is wider. I'm sure there will be similar nuances of compatibility around 7 speed, I've just forgotten or never knew that information!

I had a look and the old Shimano one I have is a bit different in that it fits around the wheel nut.

Here is a Sheldon Brown link with all you ever needed to know about compatibility of chain etc.
