Courtesy of the Stroud Vintage Transport Club, I bring you this fascinating and sort of successful attempt to create an electric drive that involves no batteries.

Interesting to contemplate how this might be applied to a car...

It's called a magnetic gearbox and has been used in industry for some time.
Significant research has gone into using them on wind turbines.

One thing to consider is that they cost a LOT more in materials. You need significant advantages to make it worth the cost.
In wind turbines it's the gearboxes ability to cope with over torque that may make it worth the cost.

Only it's not an electric drive at all, it's a leg-powered drive. If you fancy pedalling your car then I suppose it might have some sort of application but I certainly won't be buying one.
