This is Ben Macintyre's recent book and makes a great read. As the blurb says it reads just like a vintage John le Carre. It recounts the events of 30 years ago when MI6 spirited the KGB/British spy Gordievsky out of Russia by road, over the border into Finland. Can highly recommend this book.

I went to see Ben Macintyre at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, telling the story covered by his book. Sell-out audience, 1000+. Very effective speaker, recommend seeing him if you get the chance. I will be getting the book when it comes out in paperback!

Ben McIntyre is a great writer and I guess I have many of his books. I bought The Spy and the Traitor in hardback in WH Smith for a 50% discount. Well worth it I'd say.

Loved the bit about playing Finlandia as they got out of Russia band over the border!

I was thinking, this would made a great film.

Then I realised that the Americans do not come out of the story too well, so I think the film will never get made.

To be fair, I often think that's precisely the sort of film that they like making....

Of course they only like making them so they can, erm, alter perceptions somewhat....
