I've watched the first two of these programmes and they are an interesting documentary of the history of photography from its inception and how medium became so popular so quickly in the 19th century.

The story about the pioneer Fox Talbot and his first negative image at Lacock Abbey of the bay window had me look out a photo taken of the same on my iPhone which the geek in me wanted to juxtapose the old and the new images together.

Lots of other anecdotes. One I particularly liked is about the Christmas truce on the Western Front in 1914 where soldiers carrying their own VPK pocket cameras took pictures of the two sides socialising and the authorities back home getting very upset when the pictures were published in the national newspapers. IMO this was probably a turning point where people started to understand the power of the photographic image.

Thanks John for drawing my attention to the series.

No problem Cal.

The latest programme covered one of my favourite photographers, Bill Brandt and also featured this famous photo by Kurt Hutton which is one of my absolute favourite photos.

Unbelievably (considering the risque subject matter) this was published in 1938 in Picture Post I'd actually alway imagined it to be a 1950's shot. Although there was some subtle censoring in the original posting so the girls knickers were not actually on display.

They also mentioned Bert Hardy more for his war photography but he also did these classic images.

I've been watching most of these. The one about Harry Burton and his photos of the tomb of Tutankhamun was interesting as well. There was a similar series on a few years ago which I think I recorded but never got around to watching, something like "The Genuis of Photography" rings a bell.

That photo of the two boys in Glasgow reminded me of the brilliant series of photos that Nick Hedges did for Shelter in the early 1970's - http://www.shelterscotland.org/lifeworthliving/
