I just took my 5-year-old son to the Winchester Science centre.
There were a huge number of hands-on things for him to do. And a lot of enthusiastic staff to help as well. And he had a lot of fun. All very positive.
I don't know how much science he picked up while he was there. But that's not important; he's too young for me to worry about that.
But it made me think.
Why am I happy to pay £50 for parents + child to go there, when I begrudge paying anything for the Science Museum in South Kensington and feel there is not enough real interactivity there (i.e. real buttons, knobs movement; keyboards and computer screens might as well be done online)?
When I was young there was a basement full of hands-on exhibits, and there didn't seem to be crowds / queues.
I feel the Science Museum has world-class exhibits but there's no information to explain what / why it is (for example, the worlds first gas-turbine car).
