Article is from 2014, but I know that one of the first trial* optical cables (so late 80s) failed because of a shark bite, so the phenomenon has been known about for over 35 years.

Many moons ago we ran some field cable (as used in the distant past for military telephony) down a Scottish hillside in order to record some data from a Hydro plant. We had no problems with crabs or sharks, but the sheep took a fancy to it.
