Pail closet system , primitive loos

Happened on this picture today and wondered what the signs painted on the doors were .
Though at first thought it was a boarded up window , it turns out they were the doors to the privies for the terrace in a poorer part of Nottingham .
Each sign says "Pail closet" another name was apparently the Rochdale system . Someone has also painted on the wall above the privies , "bedroom" .....Can't have been the best place for sleeping!!

This is part of an article from a Leicester paper from 1874 , on how to cost the emptying of the pail closets by the night-soil men , assuming they were emptied weekly !
Ewwww , guess we don't know how lucky we are !
