Any map lovers ?

For those fascinated with maps , the NLS map site now has a facility where you can view historic maps in tandem with a modern day version .

As you zoom or pan , both maps adjust accordingly . The example below is set to an 1888 map in the left screen and a modern satellite image in the right but you can vary which map you want to compare in the drop down box .

To choose the area you want , click on the (blue highlighted) "Zoom to extent" button and then click on the UK map to make your selection . Use the + button on left to zoom in .

Not at all. I think it more than useful on this board. Especially as no-one is likely to follow each and every board.
I only drew attention to the other threads as they add a number of interesting comments.

I opened a local OS map from 1865 from the NLS site, then saved a bit with a screenshot and with an Android app called Custom Maps was able to see my position shown on it. A bit quirky to set up, and annoyingly that app is not available for the iPhone.

However another app called Mapcha is, which can be used to do a similar job, but in a different way. One quirk being that the OS Grid north will not do, and I had to rotate the map slightly so true north was to the top before getting a reasonable accuracy.

Quite impressive to be able to relate field boundaries and orchards to road names and garden boundaries.

The NLS website will also allow you to overlay old maps on to current maps and/or satellite images.

It's a great site.
