"no more alcohol than a small glass of wine a day for women and a pint of beer for men"
If that is the limit then I'd rather not live an extra decade. It would feel like three.

Re: How to save the NHS hundreds of billions of pounds
The government alcohol guidelines are 'bad science' anyway - have a look at the variation across EU countries. Apparently (and I can't find the reference) the government maximum is the point at which the risks for an average person start to go slightly above those for a teetotaler.
Mortality rates for moderate drinkers are lower than those for teetotalers - I reckon part of this is the positive effect on well-being from going out and socialising with one's fellow humans, rather than sitting at home in front of the TV/PC sipping mineral water
Sadly I'm off the beer currently, to shed a couple of pounds. It will not last as I have a meeting up north next week with an overnight stay, near some very good bars...

It's a couple of pounds added over Christmas, although a bout of norovirus helped with keeping the weight down...

Alcohol is yeast piss. When some say this beer takes likes piss - they're just stating the obvious. Some say that drinking your own piss is good for you - personally I beg to differ

Yes, in the Basque country the recommended limit is 5 times higher than ours!

I'm in that moderate drinking category, good news. I don't like to drink heavily anyway as it effects my sleep too much since been 40.

Re: How to save the NHS hundreds of billions of pounds
I lost faith in the UK's position when it fell into the politically correct, but completely unscientific, trap of setting the same limit for men and women - either the single limit they set was going to be too high for women or too low for men.
So the UK kept the limit for women at 14 when it changed the guidelines in 2016, but dropped the limit for men from 21 to 14 - nonsense. It knew full well that it could still try and 'sell' cutting a limit for men to 1 pint a day, but also knew full well that if it cut the women's limit by the same 1/3 to 4 small glasses of wine a week it would be ridiculed.
Anyway, after a medical condition last year which made drinking any alcohol very unpleasant, I ceased for six months (whilst learning that there are alcohol free beers that range from the noxious to the slightly unpleasant). After that was resolved I never really bothered to take up drinking again so am well under that low limit anyway.
