I'm a bit of a sucker for a good news story (also for dogs) and this one gives hope of an improved quality of life for anyone affected by this condition.

Sorry if you consider this a little bit off topic.

We are watching an amazing film “Awakenings” with Robin Williams based on a true story by Oliver Sacks who was a doctor in New York who discovered the beneficial effects of L-dopa on catatonic patients in 1969. L- dopa is a Parkinsons drug.

These patients had gone down with encephalitis lerthargica at the same time as the Spanish Flu. Some patients were catatonic for decades. When given doses of L-dopa the patients recovered to a remarkable extent. Wikipaedia gives a writeup of this film.

All very odd. Is there any similarity with the current virus here?
