They say you are as old as you feel...

Today having finished my run I was walking back home to cool down. I met an old lady who looked clearly lost and she asked if I could help.

"Could you tell me the way to the polling station, I'm checking where it is so I know where to come on the day".

I told her. Then I reminded her that she needed to bring some ID this time.

She said she had a bus pass but no passport or driving license. I was not sure if a bus pass was OK so I suggested she should check.

"Who should I ask?, she said.

"Try online" said I.

"I don't do online"

"You could phone." I said.

"I'd rather speak face to face" she replied.

"I am 64" she added by way of explanation.

Anyway I looked online on my phone and confirmed her bus pass would be sufficient.

I wondered how this person managed in today's world.

John

FWIW she she she had always voted Tory but would not be doing so this time.

64 is fairly young to not be tech-savvy at all. Then again the world does seem today to rely on the assumption that we are all hooked up to the internet 24/7. I do wonder how many (mostly older) people fall through that crack.

Like her I prefer to do all my business face-to-face, but it is getting harder to do so these days.

A friend in the village, 82yo, used to be online but felt it wasted too much of his time, so now isn't.
Nevertheless he has a very busy social life thanks to the (landline) phone, and plays in three orchestral groups as well as being an NT volunteer guide.
He is another face-to-facer regards investing, shopping.
Fortunately he is still able to drive.

My BiL, 75yo, is not online, watches a lot of telly.

One can manage, if one wishes, provided one has local facilities.

It's a life choice.

Sure it's getting more difficult, but life choices are what they are.
Back when I was young. many older men suffered malnutrition. Arguably even starving themselves to death.

Well, cooking was women's work, so they never learned, and were not going to when they needed to feed themselves. Most managed to get by, finding others to help them or be paid to do so.

This 64 year old, will find someone, but may be disenfranchised.

Ps, I pointed out elsewhere that we were consulted about ID card's (labor government) and it was clear enough to be unpopular that the legislation was not enacted (though the government lied and rejected a unknown number of responses). Hence we now need an ID to vote. I shall use my ID to turn up and spoil my ballot. Can I ask all who remember the debate to remember it next general election. Up to you what message you send, or how you vote. A country always gets the government it deserves.

'They' also say: "You are as old as the woman you feel..."

But I'm sure I wouldn't know about that.
