Corns

For the first time in my life I've developed a corn. Anyone any experience in getting rid of them? No chiropodists around that don't have waiting lists and have read advice from NHS but have already done all that they've suggested,

I used to get them but haven't had one for a while. I think they're down to tightly fitting shoes squashing the toes up.
I've always been able to deal with them myself using the carnation corn plasters. Usually takes about 3 days, 1 corn plaster applied each day after showering.
By day three the perimeter of the corn starts to separate from the toe and then you can gently peel it off.

I got a callous (same thing, I think) on my foot and went to my NHS doctor.

She said that she could refer me to a NHS foot specialist but I would probably have to wait for months.

Or I could visit a private podiatrist and be seen immediately.

So for £30 it was removed with no pain, blood or after-effects, I notice that private foot care places are springing up on high streets, so it looks like foot care on the NHS has been out-sourced.

My wife has a very persistent corn that never goes away and is periodically removed by the podiatrist, but she has an odd-shaped foot.

As one matures, one's feet become a little more boney and this can create pressure points. One needs to be more fussy about one's shoes, perhaps wear a gel insole and renew it when it becomes tired.

I always wear two pairs of socks. That way, friction between shoe and foot is mitigated because the socks rub against each other instead of rubbing against one's foot.
One can also buy two-layer socks that do the same job.

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions. I don't wear tight fitting shoes at all these days, I only take a size 3 and seem to spend most of my days in size 4 wellies so I can wear a thick pair of socks with comfort. I've ordered some corn plasters so hopefully they'll do the trick. I'm reluctant to go down the podiatrist route because I'm so ticklish> I suppose this seems weird but I was rushed into hospital with diverticulitis and the docs were not amused when I kept howling with laughter every time they prodeded and poked me. If someone was touching my feet I'd be crying with laughter, not a good impression really.
