Speech which is meant to be overheard

#199237

Postby MyNameIsUrl » February 6th, 2019, 9:27 am

It's common for someone to be ostensibly speaking to one person, whilst clearly the words are designed for another person to overhear. What is this kind of speech called - I'm guessing maybe the Greeks had a name for it?

Examples:
in the office, someone comments in jest to one workmate 'we'll be really busy next week as someone will be off enjoying their holiday' in earshot of the person going away
in a bar, one man says to his mate 'we don't like foreigners in our pub do we Nigel', designed to offend a nearby person
and most obviously, saying to a dog 'stop it that man doesn't want mud on his trousers'

Is there an accepted term which describes this kind of speech?

Urban Dictionary - Loud Talking?
meaning :
"A person that is involved in a conversation, whether on the phone or in person, that speaks loudly enough so that others within close proximity can hear their side of the conversation. Typically used to gain support or sympathy for themselves."

Soliloquy.

Often, but not confined, to usage in a dramatic context.

The theatrical term is "an aside" - something intended for the audience to hear, while the characters on stage are unaware.
