Why do I always feel rough on Fridays?

#118659

Postby AleisterCrowley » February 16th, 2018, 5:17 pm

Friday afternoons in particular..

I don't have a fixed diet so no regular meal(s) that could cause it
I don't drink on work nights (Sun-Thu inclusive)

I did wonder if it was a delayed hangover effect from previous Fri/Sat (hell of a delay, and I feel OK midweek normally) - but I didn't drink last Saturday and I still, suddenly, feel a bit rough today
I don't do anything different on a Friday, no medication changes, location changes, carbon monoxide sources etc

Any ideas?

Allergy to work? Takes a few days to build up.

Your body giving you an excuse to drink tonight. You'll feel better after a couple.

I always do!
I was, semi-seriously, thinking it may be the cumulative work effect.
The Friday downer is less common when I've had a day or more off in the week

Stress, anxiety, workload, worry, diet, health, lifestyle, exposure to pollutants etc, etc.....or its just your imagination.

Remember Friday is POETS day = *iss off early tomorrows saturday.... so if you stay late it's not gonna help.

None of the above are any different on a Friday ..
I thought Poets' Day was a BT tradition (ex employee)- must be in general use, unless you admit to working for that lumbering behemoth!
(If you suffer from beer moths, a light gauze screen over your pint glass usually helps)

At the height of my misspent youth I would feel sick every Sunday evening. Turned out it was DT's - withdrawal after the drinking excesses of Friday and Saturday night.

And of course a hatred of Monday mornings. Since I retired, Monday morning is my favourite time of the week. Fridays are the worst, obviously.

My Friday/Saturday excesses surely can't lurk unseen until Friday pm then emerge?

I reckon this is it. You look forward to Friday so much by the time it gets here you're just drained of all your energy.

According to the BBC today though, the 30 hour week is coming. I myself went down to 4 days a week* some years ago. A 3 day weekend is just the absolute dogs. Almost a perfect balance. Almost.

*the 4 days are pretty busy though!

I reckon Wednesdays off would suit me; work two, one off, work two, two off and repeat

What about sleep patterns? Do you undersleep during the week and then catch up on the weekend?

What about hydration? Do you drink less water on Fridays? Or more coffee?

It's obvious that you are allergic to Friday's and need to alter your working week to Monday - Thursday.

I'd hazard a guess at it being psychological, with the finish of the working week in sight your subconscious is letting go of the focus and preparing to relax.
As an illustration, I used to do lots of races, over distances from 5K all the way up to quite silly. What each race held in common was the final stretch feeling really difficult, and I would cross the line thinking that I was spent both physically and mentally even though the race distance might be far less than I was capable of running. This seemed to be universal among all the runners.

For example, I could never quite dip under the hour for 10 miles, I'd run really hard and finish knackered. I ran the Reading Half marathon back in the day when they had someone calling out your time as you went through 10 Miles, I was feeling quite fresh and was astonished when the guy called out 58 minutes, a similar sort of thing would happen in Half and full Marathons etc, as soon as the finish was in sight the subconscious would start letting go.

I suggest that is perhaps what is happening with your Friday experiences.

Seems obvious to me. This AleisterCrowley bloke is somehow being punished by his body for organising so many Fool socials on a Thursday instead of Friday. You know what to do young Comms man.

I'd say it was likely sleep related, possibly sleep debt catching up with you on Fridays. But I am no expert. If you haven't already you should go see someone about it.

Yes, I reckon it's sleep patterns and/or a psychological end-of-week effect.
We all have our ups and downs, and I don't think it's an illness - just puzzled by the consistent pattern.
The only constant is;
By Friday I'll normally have done 4 days work, with 5 'work night' sleeps.

It may not be an illness per se, but it is a potentially serious health issue, and if you have not already done so, it is worth taking action.

Surely the other constant is that you wave spent 4 days in the same building?

I have had customers, in the past, where I would not be available to do more than 3 days on the trot because, lighting/air conditioning/overheating/something in the air, made me feel rough and I could only take it for 3 days. These were usually in building with little or no natural light or ventilation.
