DAK how to create a map with multiple grid refs?

#119509

Postby Clariman » February 21st, 2018, 5:14 pm

I'd like to create a map with multiple points marked on it based on grid references. Ideally I would like to be able to categorise them too, like having 4 symbols that I would place on the map based on individual grid refs - with multiple of each.

DAK how I can do this?

Thanks
C

The experts will be along soon but here's a random dot com map and pin marker website https://www.easymapmaker.com/features/c ... ogle-maps/

The basic level appears to be free https://www.easymapmaker.com/pricing

Google Maps allows you to create your own layers (as long as you have a Google account) with configurable icons etc to overlay onto it's standard maps.

There are plenty of online videos showing you how to do it.

I don't know how free 'free' is. I've got a work copy of MapInfo Professional 11.0

I have done just this, using an OS base map to show the grid and adding footpaths and other features not shown on the OS map.

Using an iOS app called GridPoint GB I can find a grid reference for my actual location.

I also found https://osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/ to be able to show a section of map and show the grid reference of any point on it.

For the map I used, I actually cheated by using Bing Maps, which if you are zoomed in far enough allows the option of a layer showing the OS map including the 1:25,000 series. Setting to full screen view, taking screenshots of adjacent sections and stitching them together using GIMP.

Not suitable for commercial purposes, and a bit laborious, but it works and allows the use of layers which is convenient for separating certain types of information. You can then include stuff on a layer that was wanted for compiling, but which would clutter the printed map, but print with that layer hidden.

Going a little off-topic, but I use the Viewranger app on my phone, in conjunction with the website https://my.viewranger.com for walking paths. If you choose the public domain map "OpenCycleMap" you'll find it has far more (walking) paths marked on it than OS maps have. You'll probably find the paths you're interested in already there.

If you don't need the navigation facilities of Viewranger, you can go directly to the map at https://www.opencyclemap.org/

(With reference to the OP, Viewranger allows you to plot points of interest on the maps.)

Scott.
