Creating a flyer/poster

#147400

Postby didds » June 22nd, 2018, 5:50 pm

Im orgainsing a surprise party for my wife for next May (2019). Its in effect a mini music festival - some headlining acts that we've seen over the apst few years, plus some local acts and muscial theatre companies that we know/are in. (No bands you'll mlikely to have heard of - no household names anyway :-).

As part of the weekend I'm trying to piece together a logo to use on invites/ "tickets" / tee shirts.

Ive got a very basic idea of what I'd like but I am absolutely useless at drawing/art - and I've asked but had no joy with asking friends if they can help.

Here is my pathetic effort/ VERY rough draft

https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0bzfl506ljvv ... t.jpg?dl=0

DAK of any online services/sites/whatever that can help me cobble this together as something that actually will pass for "artwork" for posters/tee shirts/"tickets" etc ?

DIY. It's amazing what you can achieve cutting and pasting clip art.

Or, local art college/classes. Just the sort of practical assignment their tutors love. Expect some weird results though.

What have you done? What are you buttering her up for?

(Don't tell me - it's none of my business. But I expect she'll want to know).

Re: the question, I can't really suggest anyone. I can think of two people who've done artwork either for me or for a project where I was involved, but there's no reason to suppose they'd suit your tastes even if I could dredge up contact details. Why not google for artwork, then think of suitable search terms to narrow your search? That'll turn up some freelancers who'll be all-too-keen to get a commission from you. Make a shortlist - or find someone - from among those whose portfolios inspire you with the most confidence.

In addition to trying to find someone local, 2 options you have are:

Outsource to a professional via an outsourcing website. As it's digital, it doesn't make any difference if it's done in India or the Philipines. Eg some of the sites here:
http://www.thefitrepreneur.com/9-best-outsourcing-websites/

Have a go at doing it yourself using open source like gimp or inkscape. There's a learning curve, but it's an interesting and satisfying learning curve.
(I got into these software when I gave a friend a doodle to turn into a logo, and after a lot of tooing and froing with me not quite liking her ideas, she just tidied up my doodle and gave it back to me saying "Satisfied now?". It became the logo and I took it from there)

I'll have a look at it for you, but not this weekend. I was a graphic designer BC. I don't promise anything but I'll look.

https://www.fiverr.com/

Never used it myself, but for £50 you could get 5-10 versions to choose from?

Fiverr is a good suggestion. I've had good experiences with it, but you have to take a 'portfolio' approach and assume that it doesn't work out now and then. Most of the time $5-$10 is sufficient and saves a lot of hassle - just as long as you can give them a clear specification.

Edit: also check out Fiverr's cartoonists as they can work wonders when given a photo (if you like being a Simpson's character for instance).
