Travel Insurance

If I have travel insurance with two or more companies, and I need to claim, is the decision mine which company I lodge the claim with? I find that the question is asked when any claim is made - "do you have any other insurance"?

You can decide who you make the claim with but you must tell them you have other insurance, you will then find they each try to say the other is liable and you end up waiting an age for your payout. I don't think being double insured is a good idea really.

Usually it just means that you have travel insurance and, say, private medical, the latter of which may cover some specific bills/costs and there is not much arguing. But if you have two the same it'll be a royal pain.

I experienced this once, when I needed to claim for a pair of glasses lost while on holiday.

I had holiday insurance so claimed, and they asked whether I had any other insurances that might also provide cove such as house insurance. I did, so provided the details and it turned out that my house insurance covered this loss too. So the two insurance companies split the pay-out 50:50.

Neither offered to pay back half of my premium for that aspect of cover though . . . I sort of understand why but it does seem wrong, on a heads they win, tails I lose basis.

and from now on...for 4 or 5 years you will have to declare that you have made a claim on house insurance...so possibly seeing increased premiums
possibly also required to declare on future travel insurance applications....but I don't know for sure
