Purple headed & green lower trees on A3

Driving along the A3 between Hindhead and Liphook on Friday, I notice about 10-20 trees on either side of the road that had purple coloured leaves on the top, which gradually changed to green lower down. Are these a species of Maple? If so which? Its presumably related to leaf fall, as they weren't purple about 2 weeks ago.
