Moving - cancelling broadband and getting it at new address

#165759

Postby AleisterCrowley » September 11th, 2018, 10:45 pm

I'm moving soon-ish
I've currently got Sky bog-standard broadband (ADSL) at a not-very-cheap £30 /month
There's a nice easy transfer form on the Sky website, but I suspect that's not going to be the most cost effective solution
Any advice? Cancel Sky and shop around? I would like it set up at new address asap after 15th September ie not wait three weeks.
New address a short distance from local exchange. I currently get 5-6Mbps download, which is sufficient but would like a bit more

Much as I hate sending you off to another website, Martin Lewis's Money Saving Expert site has a pretty good run down on the options https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phone ... broadband/

You could probably negotiate Sky down. When my deal came to an end, I negotiated hard to get my monthly ADSL/Phone to £15 per month.

Thanks - I'll see what is available at the new place and have a word... Worst comes to the worst, I could tether to work iPhone, or even (shudder) walk 15 mins to office until b/band set up

Two weeks ago I telephoned Sky to complain about my broadband and told them I was leaving for a rival company (Talk Talk). They offered fibre and remarkably told me they had a special deal at the moment where fibre was cheaper than standard broadband for 18 months as long as you pay a £50 transfer fee. I refused so they waived the £50. If you use a Sky transfer form you will only get the service you currently have.

The tactic seems to be to look online for competitors prices and tell Sky you are leaving for a different supplier. You will be passed on to their retention team who will offer you a better deal to stay with them when you move home.

I think a chat with Sky is the way forward- see what they offer. I guess once they know it's 'me' moving to new address I wouldn't be able to get any new customer offers if i cancel and apply at new location

wrt "new" customer, and at the risk of making a social faux pas, if you have a partner they could apply to get the new customer deals etc. Apologies oif you do not fit this scenario.

FWIW several years ago GEM recovery had this situation ie renewals couldn't get the same cheaper deals available to a new customer so my wife and I used to flip as the new customer every year - for a couple's cover!
