Disposal, recycling of VHS tapes and kitchen knives
Having a garage clear out. Do any charity shops take VHS tapes or kitchen knives (in block)? If not, what is best way to recycle?
Thanks

The VHS tapes should go to the local tip and probably the kitchen knives too, unless they are really good quality one when the charity shop might be interested. Not sure whether charity shops have rules about knives though.

You can recycle the VHS tapes at Terracycle, if you can afford to. Depending on the quantity involved it will cost you either side of £2 per tape to do so though.
Knives, try the charity shops, otherwise their metal content can be recycled at your local recycling centre.

£2? To recycle?
Tip it is then!
The tip people complained we were using the facilities too much after a proper de-junking of the house. We had lots of bonfires instead.

Re: Disposal, recycling of VHS tapes and kitchen knives
We got rid of some old video tapes a few months ago. As far as I am aware, it's just the tape that is not recyclable. I unscrewed them and removed the tape, and then put the rest in my mixed plastics, metals and glass recycling bin. The tape gave an hour or so if fun (small child, and something to do with a dolls house kidnapping game, I think) before it went in the rubbish (landfill) bin. Binmen removed the recycling without any problem, so I assume it was okay.

My local hospice charity shop always has a basket of pre-recorded VHS tapes. Usually things that would not get onto DVD, so worth asking any of your local charity shops if they would be interested.
BHF website says no knives https://www.bhf.org.uk/shop/donating-go ... n-not-sell

My local Barnados shop took the knives and they told me they'd take the VHS tapes. However when I returned with the tapes a different member of staff said they didn't. Never mind, they'll be on my next visit to the dump.

Put them inside a clear plastic bag and leave them outside the front gate, somebody'll have them.

Put them inside a clear plastic bag and leave them outside the front gate with a sign next to them saying "Rare erotic videos for sale, £25 each, please apply within" somebody'll have them.

Charity shops in posher areas stopped taking videos years ago, they might still do in downmarket areas.

Why would I leave my home movies outside the gate?

Hang on!!
I'm still using a video or would be if we had a TV. Why throw away perfectly good tapes?

VHS I'm afraid. When it comes to technology I tend to be a late adopter, and follow the herd.

Re: Disposal, recycling of VHS tapes and kitchen knives
I find it hard to appreciate that home video taping technology has been introduced, gained wide acceptance, matured, and gone obsolete, all in my adulthood.
I was never a first adopter, but fairly early. I have, in my life, paid £400 for a video recorder, £400 for a microwave, £400 for a CD player and £400 for a DVD player. Seems utter madness now.
Scott.

Unless there are any specific regulations regarding the number of loads allowed I'd be tempted to tell them to mind their own business. Certainly in this area and in Brighton where I used to live there are no limits on how often residents visit the tip if they are in a car or SUV. Vans need a permit and are limited to 12 permits per year.
You may just have come up against a jobs worth or busybody. I take about 5 estate car loads to the tip every week, we are renovating the house and garden so there is a lot of waste produced. Actual building waste goes in a skip but all the other stuff goes to the tip.

CK, if it would save you the journey, I could post the videos to you?
