Re: This
Ah. Thanks. I'm feeling old fashioned (except I know what a meme is so I could be worse). C.

"Trope" has been around for almost a thousand years, although I recognise that is considered dangerously modern in certain parts of the Conservative Party.

Trope was I thought part of Greek literary analysis and Dawkins coined meme in the 1970s, but I feel meme has been appropriated by social media.

Re: This
My classical education was obviously deficient, but we had to choose Greek or Science in Form 2. History or Geography in Form 3. Then we could only take 8 subjects in School Certificate, so Divinity and English Literature bit the dust. As I recall, I took English Language, Maths, French, Latin, History, Art, Physics and Chemistry.
I still do not know what trope or meme mean, nor how you pronounce meme. I do know how people pronounce quinoa, but I don't know which is the correct way. The Aztecs might be able to tell us.

Re: This
TJH,
Meme is pronounced like gene it shares some similarities and was coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, it's the concept that an idea or theme has an underlying part, the meme, that can be spread through a culture. A card game as an idea can spread and vary or evolve.
A trope is a literary device or common plot convention. I'm sure I came across tropes in looking at rhetoric and discussion of Greek philosophy.
Both concepts have been applied in the social media world and like so many things the initial meanings have blurred.
Woke was clearly made common this century.

Strange bundling there. I've been comfortable with trope and meme for as long as I can remember.
But if anyone uses "woke" to me (other than in the sense of "I woke up this morning"), I think I'm going to hit back: Hey, grandpa, get with it. Noone says that any more.

When did it change from no-one or no one?
