Government Gateway account.

I am signed up for this service with the government, via a 12 digit number and a password, in the usual way to most of us, it worked well last week when I had an income tax query, in addition to secure sign in, they phone to give a unique PIN, yes sorry I know you know all this, my question is, how do I change my phone number on their system to get the PIN? I'm moving house soon, and it's my landline number they have, and no, I can't keep it. I've been looking all over their website and can't find a way to do it. Address is easy, phone not so. Does anyone know?

TIA,
dp

I believe you need to phone HMRC’s online services helpdesk to deactivate the old phone number and will then be asked to re-register the next time you log in.

Sign in to your account.
On the 2nd row from the top of their website there's a link to 'Your Account' and inside there is a link to 'Sign-in details
Manage your Government Gateway details
'

Scroll down to:
Your security preferences
This is how you get access codes
Text message
+44xxxxxxxxxxx
Update

You can add other ways of getting access codes:

How do you want to get access codes?

Text message
Get codes sent to a mobile phone.

Voice call
Get codes by automated message to a UK mobile or landline.

Authentication app for smartphone or tablet
Get codes generated by an authentication app on your mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.

How are you signing in? When I go in via HMRC, I don't get a "security preferences" section after "Manage your Government Gateway details", just name, email address and password.

Enter user name and password. Wait for access code to arrive on my mobile. Enter access code. Bada bing.

Have you enabled access codes? I think it's something I had to set up fairly recently after trying to log in.

Perhaps that only appears after you've set up an access code. Have you scrolled down ;)

Hmm. I log in via https://www.gov.uk/log-in-register-hmrc-online-services . I have a phone set up and I therefore get an SMS. Once logged in I can access Manage your Government Gateway details, but phone number is not one of the details there.

During the log in process I get an option to say ( I paraphrase ) " I cannot access this phone" , but I have not gone there, because I don't want the risk of breaking anything. I do know I have a backup phone registered as well as my main number - this was done by being prompted during log in in the past.

Take your existing 'phone number with you.

If BT (or other incumbent provider) have a problem with that, transfer it to AN Other. I moved mine to sipgate, and have now kept it through two house moves.

Thanks Gaggsy, that's it. I found the My account tab, clicked on that, then clicked on My personal details instead of My sign in details. The former gives no change phone number option, whilst the latter does. You can change any sign in detail there, even the password prompt word, which I have forgotten.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply,

Sorry, I meant to say - what URL do you go to to sign in?

Yes I use access codes and yes I've scrolled down. It seems not everyone gets the same account details page. Though I accept the OP has been answered.

https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/gg/sign- ... e=/account

That's what I have saved in Lastpass but the url of the website that opens is the one I gave earlier

There's a deal of weirdness here.
https://www.access.service.gov.uk/login/signin/creds returns "You cannot access the service from this page". Gaggsy's URL claims ( on redirect ) to be that URL, but clearly can't be, since it does allow you to log in. When I do so, I see the same options that I stated earlier -

Government Gateway Details : Name, Email, Password, Recovery word

My details : Name, Address, NI details

No options to alter phone numbers.

Oh great, I'm quite pleased I started all this kerfuffle!
I just go to the Gov.uk home page and put Government Gateway in the search box. It seems to work for me....
Sorry I can't post a proper link, I just can't.

The Gaggsy solution does not work for me.

However what did work was to log in from the new location and, when sent the access code, tick the box which says you cannot receive it. You are then offered the opportunity to change the settings.
It seems a very odd way to do things.
