This morning three single engine planes flew over in loose formation. They were all painted in camouflage colours and I think all had roundels painted on them. Two had ruler straight wings with rounded ends, like a lolly stick. The third had wings with straight edges and ends but which tapered towards the tips. This is all a bit vague, but what might that have been? I'm quite good at WWII planes having spent my teen years making models of them - we had a spitfire fly over about a week ago, and a Dakota flew over at a very low level some while ago. These three didn't look like combat aircraft to me.
The third, maybe, was a Chipmunk. I see the battle of Britain flight has two. I can't work out the other two though!

Re: Mystery vintage aircraft
Could the two with straight wings have been Harvards? Radial engines and constant speed props which make an horrendous noise in fine pitch. Retractable undercarriage, whereas the Chipmunk has a fixed undercarriage and would be hard pushed to keep up with Harvards, 85 knots compared with about 120 knots cruising speed, from memory.

Re: Mystery vintage aircraft
Thanks for the ideas. I don't think I'll ever know without a photo. It seems plausible they were on their way to/from Duxford anyway!
