Re: Threads needing a Login?
Are these threads on Polite Discussion by any chance?
Maybe they have been moved/redirected there from other boards. This occasionally happens when discussion becomes too politically charged for our financial or Pub boards.
The Polite Discussions board is hidden from guest visitors (including search bots), and only visible to registered users who have explicitly asked to see it (in their user settings).
Otherwise, perhaps you can give us an example of a thread that needs login.

In order not to encourage people taking sides and 'tactical thanking' eg. always thanking posters of a similar political leaning to yourself regardless of whether the post is actually any good.

Re: Threads needing a Login?
Folks,
1. Thanking on the Polite Discussions board is disabled so as to minimise posters playing to the gallery. On some other boards such as Laughing Lemons it is also disabled for various similar reasons.
2. Logging in is required for some boards so as to hide them from bots, and casual visitors. There are some folks out there with bots (etc) set up to search for particular sorts of posts that are quite reasonable opinions to hold, but which nonetheless have considerable potential to cause a lot of legal etc aggravation to TLF, or even could lead to TLF disappearing. By requiring a log-in the barrier to nuisance and other problems is raised, and it becomes easier for TLF to defend against unwarranted charges.
3. Some boards require people to opt-in in order to access them (or is it that they can opt-out). I think that Polite discussions is one such. In order to know that you are an 'opted' person the server needs to know who you are, i.e. you need to be logged in.
regards, dspp
