Old bottle champagen

#347728

Postby mutantpoodle » October 14th, 2020, 7:08 pm

About 55 years ago my wife’s brother won a half bottle champagne in some competition or other...no details
It’s still unopened
It’s Moët n Chandon

Will it be any good?
I not expecting it to be a unique vintage
But I don’t want to lose it if it might be drinkable

Any thoughts on how to assess...?.

The thought processes on this are so tricky. On the one hand I'm inclined to say open it, sniff it, then perhaps take a sip would be a first class way to assess. On the other hand, you might decide to keep it for another 100 years then your descendants might post on here asking the exact same question....

And what if it has gone off? Opening it will save you the trouble of keeping some off wine for the rest of your life and you'll have found out now. But if it tastes good, you'll be kicking yourself for wasting it... um....

Make sure that you have one of those champagne bottle caps first, then open it.

If it give a loud pop, it might be OK. Have a small sip. If it tastes OK then put the cap on and save till you want to use it.

If it doesn't, then down the sink and bottle in recycling.

Do you drink the overhyped muck?

If so, open it sometime when the occasion calls for it, but (if it matters) have also a trusted bottle on hand in case the vintage stuff has gone off. Then it's your spare bottle your heirs will wonder about a generation on - if you don't drink it.

It really depends where it has been kept. Under proper cellar conditions it may be alright. If you've had it on a wine rack in a centrally heated house near a sunny window then almost definitely not. The chances of it being drinkable has more to do with where it's been than its age.

All the best, Si

If the label says champagen, I would treat it with caution. Probably a fake. It must say champagen because otherwise the spellchecker would change it (as it just tried to change this post)

A spellchecker may not be available to the person you are teasing. It is not TLF’s and is dependent on the browser.
