Edinburgh Location Help

#406111

Postby Mike88 » April 22nd, 2021, 12:08 pm

Around 35 years ago I attended a conference in the Edinburgh area at a fairly run down complex on the outskirts of the city owned and run by the National Association of Youth Clubs. I recall disembarking the train at Waverley station and walking around 300 yards to a bus stop where I caught the bus to this conference centre. I seem to recall it was a longish journey.

This might be a totally red herring but I seem to recall there was a training ground for the Herriot Watt rugby club nearby but this might be a complete figment of my imagination.

Does anyone know in which part of Edinburgh the conference centre/youth club complex existed? I don't think it exists now and no amount of googling can tell me where this place is.

Thanks.

The Ingliston Showground, where the Royal Highland Show lives, has a conference centre and in the past used to host big music gigs. Not aware of any National Association of Youth Clubs connection though.

Another option might be Murrayfield Rugby ground, but not sure what facilities they would have back in those days.

Both of these are to the west of the centre though, so you'd have been more likely to use Haymarket railway station.

Any idea which direction it was?

Scott.

There's an organisation now called "Youth Scotland" based at Balfour House, 19 Bonnington Grove, Edinburgh, EH6 4BL. This is on the north side of the city, near where various rugby teams train I think.

Thanks. I am sure the railway station was Waverley. The rugby training ground was not much more than an open field seen from the road. The conference centre looked mainly like a series of ex army huts but was the then HQ of the National Association of Youth Clubs (which doesn't now seem to exist under that name) . I have no idea of the direction out of the city as the bus took a number of turns to get out of the bus station/bus stop which was opposite a bar with a load of intoxicated people hanging around outside.

From the description my guess would be the Ferry Road/Trinity area where there are still a lot of open spaces, rugby grounds attached to/*used by schools and bits of it are still fairly run down, (with great respect to any who live there)

From Waverley it feels like the outskirts.

Agreed, my final suggestion Bonnington Grove is just off Ferry Road, not far from Goldenacres and the other pitches.

It became the National Association of Girls Clubs and Mixed Clubs in 1944 (or 1945[6]) and the National Association of Youth Clubs in 1961. In 1987, it became known as Youth Clubs UK and adopted its current title

UK Youth and Youth Scotland share the same contact address

None of which answers your question, but you might find someone in the new organisation that does know the history.

There's Bangholm Outdoor Centre which looks like it comprises or is near old hut-like buildings.

That's interesting. I did not know where Bonnington Grove was. In fact I had never heard of it.
