Cleaning pickle/chutney jars for jam

#507653

Postby didds » June 16th, 2022, 2:30 pm

I have more empty pickle and chutney and pickled onion jars than i do jam jars... but I need them to typically end up storing jam. The pickle/chutney jars of course have a string odour of vinegar, and i dont want my super jam to end up smelling and tatsuing of vinegar.

so... how to clean the jars and remove the vinegar smell?

I've googled and searched youtube but im really struggling to find any definitive advice - aside form use MORE vinegar! now that may well be right, but the quantities of white vinegar these are suggesting to use would mean buying new jars form wilcos will be cheaper than re-using existing jars which is daft.

Other google gits indicate baking soda aka bicarb, but then I can't find any hints at how much bicarb, whether its a paste 9and how to use a paste on a large jar...) or a solution - and if so what "strength" or water:bicarb ration etc.

So...

DAK how to clean old pickle jars and remove the vinegar smell, cheaply and efficiently?

ta!

I would have suggested baking soda and then a dishwash.!

Fill with a solution of bleach and leave overnight, rinse well.
