Tyre codes

On a 'skinny' tyre marked 135/80 R14 84M

What does the 84M stand for?
Is it imperative to keep to those codes?

It's the load index and speed rating
It's generally recommended to go with the same or higher (86N would work)

Thank you.

Using the terms you indicated - 'the load index and speed rating' I managed to find some pages that define them.

Since we are talking about a 'space saver' emergency tyre, it should be safe to have an 80P for a car that is lightly loaded (just two people) and where the P speed is way beyond what it would be driven at in an emergency.

Agreed?

Hi eepee.

Haven't we been round this loop before?

https://www.lemonfool.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=38706&p=581523&hilit=tyre#p581523

Is there some new angle you need to cover?

Oh dear! Age is a wonderful thing!

However I would have expected some delay in re-asking of years - not six months!

Guess it is mostly because we haven't been traveling anywhere in this time and the need was put to one side.

It does of course raise the issue - should I be driving at all ??????????????

Apologies.

No, safe from what - The tyre speed rating’s also important for legal reasons. If you have a lower tyre speed rating than you should, it might invalidate your car insurance. https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/sa ... eed-rating
