Historical share prices
I need to get some idea of the price of Edinburgh Investment Trust for 30 June 1997. DAK where I can find this please? There have I think been no reconstructions of the capital since then so it will be a straight comparison with today's prices.

Most of our normal sources tend to go back only 10 years or so, One option to go back further is Google:
https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1CH ... 7Lyu0Ao1:0
Set the timescale to MAX, then as you move the mouse over the price chart, you will see date/price. The best I could see was 389p on 04Jul97

378p.
https://www.sharesmagazine.co.uk/shares ... ric-prices
( Then type in the date range).
If one types in "Edinburgh Investment Trust Share Price" into the Google search engine one can obtain a graph...set the timescale to 'max. If one now clicks on any part of the curve of the graph a dialogue box pops up with the date and share price . I faffed about trying to get the price on 30th June 97 with this method by prodding at the screen of my tablet with a fat finger but it was difficult to accurately hit on 30th June 97. Perhaps on a laptop and with a mouse it would be easier!
( the screenshot below shows the price on 20th June)

A couple of other useful links for historical share prices -
https://markets.ft.com/data/investment-trust/tearsheet/charts?s=EDIN:LSE
https://uk.investing.com/equities/edinburgh-investment-trust-historical-data
378p looks about right using both of these sources too...

Using IAAG's second link
It took me a while to learn how to change the year range quickly by clicking on the year shown in white font in the blue box (ie "2020") which then allows rapid scrolling through the years.

Re: Historical share prices
Many thanks. I tried Googling but did not get very far. The numbers you have produced are good enough. I am thinking of selling but need to have some idea of my buying price which for some reason I cannot find. 387p, provided there has been no capital adjustments since then certainly confirms my decision to sell and at the same time keeps me below the need to report for CGT in my next tax return.
So once again the resources found here are very helpful.

Probably only a typo but 378 is what is being quoted.
Sorry for the earlier deleted replies for which you may have received notifications. Had the number but couldn't type correctly whilst on the move as was losing reception.

https://www.dividenddata.co.uk/dividend ... ?epic=EDIN
The dividend history as far back as Year End 2000 would suggest that there have been no share consolidations in the last 20 years.
A quick tot up of the divis over the time period 2000 -2020 would indicate 419p of dividends.
Does anyone know of a website that provides total returns over more than a previous 5 year period (HL only provides a 5 yr window)?

Re: Historical share prices
I make it an annualised return of +4.9% (albeit with a few guesses of dividends pre year 2000).
I've not put the exact dates when divis were paid and I've lumped dividends together into annual payments. I just wanted to get a flavour of what the XIRR might be - a ball park figure. (middle column is "pence")
Looks like April 2017 might have been the best time to sell (share price reached 778p)

Re: Historical share prices
I think that there have been no shares changes since I bought it in 1997. Can't say I am not LTBM! A very poor investment though and little danger of my paying much CGT. the last few yeas of Mark Barnett's tenure were the worst although in some ways it reflects a HYP performance.
I am getting out of it though, having simply lost patience. Thanks for all the comments.

Re: Historical share prices
Wouldn't you have had to buy 13,750 shares in EDIN to run foul of CGT ? (Unsheltered in 1995).
13,750 x (468p -378p) ~ CGT annual allowance of £12,300.

You are assuming that is the only chargeable disposal (voluntary or otherwise) relatively early in 2020-21.
I’m sure Dod would have no capital losses available.

Re: Historical share prices
Or you can check in excel yourself with this little spreadsheet which pulls down the ohlc prices. For edin on 30 Jun it comes up with:
ohlc: 379/379/379/381
The close would have been the midpoint of the bid ask but it looks like the stock didnt trade except at 379 that particular day

I think that is right and I am nowhere near that so I should be able to sell with no tax consequences. I am now very wary having transferred into an ISA a lot of Imperial Brands in late April 2019 at about £23 and you know what happened to the price after that. I am left with s four figure CGT bill for simply no benefit. Can't even use the loss if I sell in the ISA. Still, that is my first disaster in filling my quota every year from existing certificated holdings over many years.
