Android Fitbit app

#110559

Postby didds » January 15th, 2018, 10:00 am

I do NOT own any fitbit kit - to make that clear :-) No watches etc.

On my previous windows phone the fitbit app would operate independently and measure footsteps (howsoever it did that and understood it can only be an approximation).

I now use an android phone - but the fitbit app for android doesn't seem to do the same independent foot step counting thing.

DAK if there is some nuance I need to tweak - or is that function just not available under android?

I have a Fitbit watch, and the app on Android. On my phone, I have to enable location services in order to use it and manually start an "exercise" in order for it to track anything on its own. I quite often do this rather than start an activity on my watch.

It seems to be a feature called MobileTrack, not available on all devices.

This should tell you what features your phone supports https://www.fitbit.com/uk/devices

Android phones should have a built in app called Google Fit that accesses a pedometer function. Download it from Google Play if it’s not already installed.

Just out of interest (because I'm not in the market to buy), I don't have a reliable mobile phone signal out here in the sticks. Not even 2G, and certainly never as much as 3G. Would that mean that these apps were useless?

Depends if the app caches data until it gets back on the network or wifi.

For example I have used Google Maps whilst on an aircraft (using a previously downloaded map, with flight mode enabled), and the location history function is updated once I get back on the ground and reconnect to wifi or mobile data.

Any pedometer function will work fine without a signal, as will Bluetooth communication between the phone and any device like Fitbit.

Also GPS tracking will work when off-network.

I'd think you'd only need mobile data or wifi to upload data to your account on the app's server, and to use any features there.

Scott.
