Travel Money and other Forex

#175128

Postby jaizan » October 20th, 2018, 12:15 am

One topic that has long interested me is avoiding getting ripped off with forex for travel and when moving money into other currencies for other purposes.
I've been spending at least 10% of the year abroad and this is about to increase significantly.

The cost of changing money can vary from about 20% down to below 0.5%, so losses are not to be ignored.

Anyhow, where should foreign exchange queries be discussed ?
Would there be any merit in having a specific sub-forum ?
I know of other sites that do this, however this particular site seems to attract a somewhat more financially astute membership base.

That's a good question. I agree that there is no obvious home for a practical forex discussion. Such a discussion would be best on one of the Managing Your Finances boards. Probably the most appropriate would be the bank and savings accounts?

For stuff to do with travel money, the Airport Lounge might be a suitable alternative to Bank Accounts Savings & ISAs, based on its "Holiday Ideas & Foreign Travel" subtitle.

Good point. I think either would be appropriate. the Airport Lounge would probably get you more or better answers thank the bank one.

I would suggest look at TransferWise. Excellent rates, and they provide a debit card which can have different currencies enabled.
