There is a similar problem developing (slowly) over on the canals forum. New posters asking generic questions whilst giving away nothing about themselves or their thoughts, then failing to engage in conversation as the thread progresses from requests for more details to a debate about whether or not they are an AI.

One of the earlier ones sticks in my mind. The thread title was (something like) "What bait should I use when shark fishing from my canoe?" Clearly it had been reading some boating and fishing forums before deciding this would be a suitably credible question to ask on the canals forum. It failed to take part in the ensuing discussion.

I see no reason to treat robertbanking in this way -- I have found all his posts to be perfectly polite (though culturally off-key perhaps) and topical and they have prompted some interesting follow-ups. If people have a problem with a particular user the correct action to take is to bring it to the attention of the mods and let them make a judgement.

In the meantime can people kindly assume good faith and treat new posters with respect and civility, especially when they are doing no-one any harm and respecting the rules of the site.

It is probably better to play it with a straight bat, or just ignore. This guy might be for real, and there are a number of other possibilities, but I agree there's no point in being unpleasant for the sake of it. I jsut ignore, as I cannot contribute anything anyway!

I have to admit, over on the canal forum we've had a couple of obvious AI burst suddenly into intelligent conversation. General opinion is the AI-like threads are initiated by a human being mischievous or whatever, then once in a while the human butts in with some obviously real human conversation.

But assuming this is AI, what is the point - what is behind it?

Aha - but they are all human presenters paid to pretend to be AI fabrications

At least robertbanking posts about investment (an increasingly minority pastime on TLF).

AIs who want to appear more human should make the occasional post slagging off the wealthy, calling for higher taxes and saying how your life has been ruined by Brexit. Also attacking successful businessmen goes down well with many on TLF.

The OP might wish to look in a mirror when commenting about personal attacks. On several occasions it has slagged me off, most recently when it said that I was "confused about investment" (my Solicitor friend says that this is "almost certainly libellous").

The wealthy - pah, what a shower, no use to anyone. What we need is higher taxes since Brexit ruined my life.

Oh no, cut myself shaving again.

I seem to remember there was a poster on TMF whose posts were not much more than interest rate decisions.
So much so it was assumed they were an old school bot
- until one day they joined in a conversation, which quickly turned to "what do you mean you're not a bot?"

or perhaps the singularity happened earlier than everyone expected
