£2,000 to invest? Then I’d consider these 2 growth and income stocks today
A lot of investors have been wary of mining giants amid talk of a global economic slowdown and a bursting Chinese bubble. I’m one of them, but maybe I got it wrong. FTSE 100-listed iron ore specialist Rio Tinto (LSE: RIO) is up 142% over three years and delighted markets today by announcing a bumper $4bn special dividend.
Rio to go
Rio’s full-year earnings were better than expected with revenues up $500m to $40bn and earnings rising 2% to $8.8bn. That $4bn special dividend, funded from the sale of its Grasberg copper mine in Indonesia and other non-core assets which raised $8.6bn, works out at $2.43 per share. It comes on top of a final dividend of $1.80 per share.
Rio Tinto is now even more focussed on iron ore, mainly in Australia, and plans to produce 338m-350m tonnes in 2019. Copper production was mixed with a potential major new discovery in Australia offset by a delay at another large site in Mongolia.
Cashing in
Shareholders can anticipate further long-term cash returns, which Rio said should be in a range of 40-60% of underlying earnings. Net debt of $4.1bn has turned into a net cash position of $300m, including cash and highly liquid investments of $13.3bn. That puts it in a strong position in case of a Chinese or commodity downturn.
This £56bn giant trades at just 11.6 times forecast earnings and its forward yield is 5.4%. Numbers like that could put some iron in your portfolio.

Update on Tropical Cyclone Veronica
https://www.investegate.co.uk/rio-tinto ... 00045835U/
Rio Tinto's iron ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia, are progressively resuming following the passing of Tropical Cyclone Veronica. However, initial inspections uncovered some damage to the Cape Lambert A port facility. As a result, Rio Tinto has declared force majeure on certain contracts and is working with its customers to minimise any disruption in supply.
The impact of the disruption to production caused by the cyclone and repairing the damage sustained at the port facilities, combined with the damage caused by the fire at Cape Lambert A in January, will result in a loss of approximately 14 million tonnes of production in 2019. As a result Rio Tinto's Pilbara shipments in 2019 are expected to be at the lower end of the 338 and 350 million tonnes (100 per cent basis) guidance provided.
Safety remains our top priority as we ramp up operations, and undertake the necessary remediation work, following the passing of the cyclone.

BHP Group trading statement is out next Tuesday. I hold both RIO and BHP, and have no intention of selling.

That would be nice, but prices go down as well as up. I assume that at some stage, VALE will be able to up its production.
In the longer term, the Winu deposit (copper/silver/gold) is of interest. No guarantees yet, and new mines can take an awfully long time to develop.
But not as long in Australia as in Mongolia, one hopes!

Those are actually the figures quoted in February in https://www.investegate.co.uk/rio-tinto ... 01062473R/
The difference this time is if someone in the Australian company makes a currency election:
The currency exchange rates which apply for Rio Tinto Limited shareholders who elect to receive the final and special dividend in pounds sterling and Rio Tinto plc shareholders who elect to receive the final and special dividend in Australian dollars are the currency exchange rates applicable on 11 April 2019, being five business days prior to the dividend payment date.
This announcement confirms the currency exchange rates applicable for the 2018 final and special dividends for shareholders who have made a currency election:
I doubt that many here will fall into that category.

Rio Tinto releases second quarter production results
http://www.riotinto.com/documents/19071 ... esults.pdf
Rio Tinto chief executive J-S Jacques said “We saw a challenging operational performance across our portfolio in the first half, while also investing in future growth at Richards Bay Minerals and Resolution. Whilst we experienced operational and weather issues at our iron ore operations in Australia, pricing and market demand has remained robust. We remain focused on safely improving and optimising the performance and productivity of our assets in order to drive future cash flow. This, combined with our value over volume strategy and the disciplined allocation of capital, will continue to deliver superior returns to our shareholders in the short, medium and long term.”

Rio Tinto is today providing an update on the schedule and cost of the Oyu Tolgoi underground project ('the Project') in Mongolia.
The Project continued to progress in 2019 towards its path to become one of the largest copper mines in the world.
Since February, key below ground infrastructure such as the control room facility and the jaw crusher system are now complete and construction of shafts 3 and 4 is progressing well. The commissioning of shaft 2 remains on track for October 2019.

Re: Rio Tinto (RIO)
An interesting item today's press, summarised by:
https://www.benchmarkminerals.com/lithi ... d-by-2030/
A century's worth of overburden/tailings at the huge Boron mine is said to have significant and exploitable lithium content. I've not noticed any regulatory announcements.
LCE prices have been tumbling of late - too many miners getting into the act? At full scale/today's prices, Rio's 15K tonne project would give an annual revenue of about $150m. Small beer by Rio's normal standards, but given that the stuff has already been mined.....
