Oh well, it will be down to the French (or US) to grab the contract. :(

But from the link...

...Airbus’s German arm has a 30 percent workshare on the Eurofighter, while Munich-based MTU Aero Engines AG helps make the aircraft’s Eurojet powerplant. BAE also supplies Saudi Arabia with Hawk jet trainers, and the German ban affects its ability to provide parts for those planes, as well as the Typhoon and older Tornado ground-attack jets...

...The Saudi war in Yemen means some of those aircraft are seeing high levels of utilization, and require replacement parts and services. MTU CEO Reiner Winkler said on a conference call Wednesday that its sale of those items for the Tornado and Eurofighter to Saudi Arabia is allowed under German policy and won’t be affected.

So there is a ban, but a German company gets to continue to sell parts for military aircraft?

I'm guessing that they had existing export licences in place and the current uncertainty relates to the grant of new export licences.

As a guess there are munitions affected, and targetting (etc) systems, not just the 'aircraft'.

So [export licences for] keeping the 'aircraft' flying is likely OK, but selling bits to be incorporated into further munitions and/or targetting (etc) systems is likely not OK.

So the Germans will not allow either a German company to sell directly to (KSA), or to sell indirectly via BAe to KSA.

Just a guess based on a very small amount of knowledge of myself over the years having applied for export licences on 'interesting' stuff.

In this instance it means that BAe will most likely have to bring substitute 'stuff' into the design (sourced either in the UK, or in a country that is OK to grant an export licence), then go through the full qualification/certification process for the design, then they are OK. This issue has also come up wrt the Galileo project as assured access to the protected level of Galileo is part of the contractual requirement to fulfill some of these export projects.

In modern defence systems this gets to the heart of sovereignty.

This from TMF, written by Royston Wild;

Why I think now could be the time to buy this unloved FTSE 100 dividend growth stock

For Footsie investors, BAE Systems (LSE: BA) continues to be something of a turn-off. It’s understandable why this is so. The defence behemoth’s share price has taken an almighty whack since the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October, and the subsequent concerns over sales restrictions to the country’s military forces.

I’ve laid out my opinion that BAE Systems is unlikely to suffer as a result of the political fallout, but full-year results released last month sent a chill down many an investor’s spine and prompted a subsequent fall in the firm’s share price. In the release, the firm chillingly warned that the “current German government position on export licensing may affect the Group’s ability to provide capability to Saudi Arabia which may have a consequential impact on [its] financial performance and relationships.”

This might account for the 2% drop in BA. SP currently;

UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia unlawful, court rules

Campaigners have won a landmark legal challenge against the government over its decision to continue to allow UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) argued that the decision to continue to license military equipment for export to the Gulf state, which is leading a coalition of forces in the Yemeni conflict, was unlawful.

The group said export licences should not have been granted as there was a clear risk that the arms might be used in a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

Three senior judges at the Court of Appeal in central London ruled on Thursday that "the process of decision-making by the government was wrong in law in one significant respect".

Announcing the court's decision, Master of the Rolls Sir Terence Etherton, sitting with Lord Justice Irwin and Lord Justice Singh, said the government "made no concluded assessments of whether the Saudi-led coalition had committed violations of international humanitarian law in the past, during the Yemen conflict, and made no attempt to do so".

No comment from BA. on this that I'm aware of.

Acquisition

BAE Systems plc - Proposed acquisition of Collins Aerospace's Military Global Positioning System business and Raytheon's Airborne Tactical Radios business.

BAE Systems plc ("BAE Systems" or the "Company") announces that it has entered into a definitive Asset Purchase Agreement to acquire Collins Aerospace's Military Global Positioning System business ("GPS business") for $1.925bn in cash, subject to customary closing adjustments. As an asset purchase there is an expected tax benefit[i] of c.$365m.

The Company has also entered into a definitive Asset Purchase Agreement to acquire Raytheon's Airborne Tactical Radios business ("Radios business") for $275m in cash, subject to customary closing adjustments. As an asset purchase there is an expected tax benefit[ii] of c.$50m.

Completion of both acquisitions are subject to successful closure of the Raytheon-United Technologies Corporation (UTC) merger, as well as customary regulatory approvals and conditions.

These two proposed acquisitions represent a unique opportunity to purchase high quality technology based businesses with market leading capabilities and long histories of pioneering innovation in their fields. These assets have come to market as part of the regulatory process relating to the merger of Raytheon and UTC. Both businesses are highly complementary to our US-based Electronic Systems business and on completion they would be integrated into our Electronic Systems division.

The above has gone down well on market opening, with the sp up over 3%.
I hold, and have held BA. for years. I have no intention of selling out currently, and shall continue with my ltbh stance.

Thanks for the heads up on the practical board, if it wasn't for you, I would not see many of these news items, not that I intend to do anything mind you! I too purchased for my ISA in October 2009, topped up in 2010 and twice in 2011 for an average price of £3.2006.

You’re welcome John. I would buy more BA. but I have a full holding. The 3.7% rise in the stock’s sp was reassuring too.
