VOD appeared as a top selection in a recent Stephen Bland "how to build a HYP" article.

They are doing some financial engineering involving debt for equity swaps in order to finance a proposed acquisition.

Thanks for your input Alaric. Interesting times for VOD shareholders I think, although I'm in no mind to buy even more of their shares, as I've spent enough there already.

Ian.

I do not any attention to tipsters and, to be fair, I am not sure that Stephen Bland has ever claimed to be a tipster anyway.

More from TMF, penned by Alan Oscroft;

Vodafone’s share price is rising. Is it time to buy?

There’s an old idea, called the efficient-market hypothesis, which claims that share prices fully reflect all known information, and suggests it’s impossible to beat the stock market as all new information is quickly reflected in adjusted share prices.

It’s obviously tosh, as any look at the real world and the way irrational humans work will quickly show.

Overpriced

Vodafone (LSE: VOD) is a good example. For years, its shares looked very highly priced to me. They were on valuations that significantly exceeded those of the company’s peers, after initially soaring back in the days of takeover speculation and never falling back.

There must be a good reason, something I don’t know but which big investors have latched onto, I thought. But no, there was nothing, and since the end of 2017, the shares have been steadily revalued downwards.

They really had, simply, been overvalued in a way the academics claim doesn’t happen, and it’s taken a 40% slump to get us back to where I can see some rational valuation. And, though I’m not a chart-watcher and I recommend caution over what I’m about to say, there are signs that the price has bottomed and is starting to tick up again.

We’re looking at only a modest 8% rise since the first week in March, slightly ahead of the FTSE 100‘s 5%, and that leaves Vodafone shares trading on a P/E of 18 based on expectations for the year just ended in March — results are due on 14 May.

Good luck Ian - VOD are just about an average sized holding in my HYP so I won't be topping up - fingers crossed that the dividend either increases slightly, or maintained.

Cheers, OLTB.

Thank you. It is my intention to just hold tight hence forth regarding VOD. It's unlikely I'll be buying any more in the near future, as I'm up to full weighting already, with regards to capital invested. Not my best bet, but I can wait.

VODAFONE SIGNS CABLE WHOLESALE AGREEMENT WITH TELEFÓNICA DEUTSCHLAND

Vodafone Group Plc ("Vodafone") announces today that it has entered into a definitive agreement for a cable wholesale agreement in Germany with Telefónica Deutschland ("Telefónica DE") ("the Cable Wholesale Agreement").

The Cable Wholesale Agreement will allow Telefónica DE to offer high-speed broadband services to consumers on Vodafone and Unitymedia's cable network in Germany, and is subject to the completion of Vodafone's acquisition of Liberty Global's operations in Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania ("the Transaction") which is conditional on European Commission approval.

Under the terms of the Cable Wholesale Agreement, Telefónica DE will be able to market broadband services over the combined Vodafone and Unitymedia cable network in Germany, which covers 23.7 million households. Telefónica DE's customers will benefit from access to download speeds of up to 300 Mbps on the combined cable network, superior to the highest available speeds offered by wholesale DSL access, enabling Telefónica DE to deliver competitive broadband and over-the-top (OTT) TV services.

A couple of comments below the article which might be relevant to the "HYP" debate.

The funny thing is that dozy old private investors would have bought the shares thinking they were actually going to get paid a 9% yield. They probably own Centrica as well.

Quite why small investors buy such cyclical stocks is beyond me. What good is a 9% dividend if the shares tank as is voda's case. I would look pretty hard at a fund which invested in such stocks as well

A fairly substantial cut. Not unexpected. I intend to work on the assumption that next year's interim will be cut by a similar %age, which would take the overall dividend (this year's final and next year's interim) down to 7.03 eurocents - or 6.11p at todays exchange rate.

Still a reasonable yield at about 4.6%. May even be sustainable!

Agreed 77ss, thanks for your post. I’m quite relaxed about VOD now tbh. Sunning myself here in Orkney helps lol.

Vodafone Germany has won the country's auction of spectrum licences for next generation 5G mobile networks at a cost of 1.9bn euros. Hasn't done much for the s.p. What I'd like to know is when we can expect calls between interviewees and BBC programmes not to be (almost invariably) cut off making the programmes rather pointless. Seems incredible that we can get people to the moon but not sustain a phone line for more than a few seconds.
